Lorac Mega Pro Palette - review and swatches

This is a pretty speedy first impressions review of the limited edition Lorac Mega Pro Palette... I thought I should try to get this up ASAP since this palette is selling out, being restocked, and selling out again very quickly. So if you want to get your hands on it then you better be quick when it is restocked again.

So I recently bought the two Lorac Pro Palettes (see review here) and even though I loved the formula I was missing a lot of warm mid toned neutrals... the Lorac Mega Pro has filled that void for me!

I also did a video review below:

I bought the Lorac Mega Pro from Amazon for US$59 plus US$6.93 shipping... so around AU$75 with shipping. It is currently out of stock, but keep an eye out for if/when it comes back in stock. Shipping took 8 days from the day that I ordered it.

The only downside with ordering from Amazon was that it arrived in a padded envelope which isn't secure enough for a delicate palette... and even though my palette arrived safe and sound, I have heard that a lot of people received theirs damaged.

The design of the palette is the same as the Lorac Pro and Pro 2. It is made of a sturdy cardboard with a rubberised finish, magnetic closure and mirror in the lid. The main difference is that this is a cranberry red and gold design (since it is a Christmas limited edition palette) and it is twice the size of the Pro Palettes. The size of the eye shadow pans are the same as the in the Lorac Pro and Pro 2 palettes.

Oh it is also worth mentioning that, unlike the Lorac Pro and Lorac Pro 2, this doesn't come with an eye primer sample.

Above is a photo of the pans in the Pro, Pro 2 and the Mega Pro... so you can see the differences in the shades and also that the pan sizes are the same.

Unfortunately Black is in all of the three palettes (which is my main gripe about this Mega Pro Palette) but there are a couple of double ups with the first Pro palette as well - White, Cream and Espresso. You can see that there are a lot of similar shades - Gold/Copper, Charcoal/Gray, Lt Brown/Camel, Sand/Beige etc... but they are different enough. There are also similar shades in different finishes - Mauve/Dusky Rose, Chrome/Stone, Lt Bronze/Fawn.

You can see the 32 shades in the photos above. The top two lines are matte and the bottom two lines are shimmer/satin. You can definitely see that the pigmentation is quite nice (swatches are without any primer), but some shades are a little soft and powdery and you can easily pick up too much product with your brush.

You will also notice that this palette has a hell of a lot of sandy gold shades. It is a very warm toned palette and would suit people who love gold toned-nudes. Sure, there are a couple of cooler shades (Lilac, Gray and Deep Teal being a few), but even the cooler taupes (like Stone and Wisteria) tend to have a rosy hint to them which gives them more of a neutral (not cool, not warm) feel to them.

Overall I love this palette! There is a huge range of shades and you can do a wide variety of looks using this one palette. The quality is amazing and the only shade that was lacking pigmentation was Lilac. The only downside with the formula was that they were very soft and you can kick up a lot of product if you aren't careful. This is a very yellow based palette... the light shimmery shades leaned gold, the bronzes were gold toned, the mattes were very yellow based... so if you don't suit gold/yellow based shades then I would give this a big miss! I personally love yellow based shades so I love all of these shades.

I also love how many mid toned shades there are. One of the problems I had with the original Lorac Pro palette was that it jumped from light shades to dark shades without much in between. My only main negative is that there are so many similar black shades, and the matte black is found in both of the original Pro palettes... I really don't use that much black eyeshadow!

If you are a lover of cool toned shadows or if you hate yellow based shadows, I would give this a miss.... if that's not you, then I HIGHLY recommend this palette. It's a bit early to call, but I think this my favourite palette of 2014.

  1. That's surprisingly in depth for a quick review! ;) I just purchased the Lorac palettes (well, my sister who was in the US did for me) and I thought about getting this one too but I hadn't heard good things :( Especially of Amazon's handling of it.
