August Favouites

Spring has finally sprung (is that even a word?)! In the last week or two I have really been enjoying the nicer weather, I didn't realise how much I missed the feeling of the warm sun (I swear the sun is actually cold in winter). I started a new full time job on the 1st of August so I have been pretty boring with my favourites this month and most of the makeup I have been wearing is "work appropriate" makeup, but here we go...

Kester Black/Trophy Wife nail polish in Prenup: Ok bad example of my "work appropriate" makeup. My first week of my new job I was trying to be really good and wear reds and pinks on my nails... then I came across this new Spring/Summer Kester Black nail polish and Trophy Wife collaboration and I have been wearing this Prenup colour on my nails and toes for the majority of the month. I love this icy pale purple shade, it's light, it's bright, and it's almost new job appropriate... maybe? This will be a go to shade for the warmer months... it would look gorgeous with a tan.

Urban Rituelle perfume in Cotton Candy: I am a bit of a derp and forgot to include this in the picture at the start of this post... and ok, ok... I am also too lazy to retake the photo. This is an in your face sweet perfume, but I can't get enough of it. It is sickly sweet and has no shame. If you want to smell like sugar and all things amazing, then try this! It doesn't last all day, but I can't help loving it!

Mary Kay NouriShine Plus Lip Glosses in Pink Luster and Berry Tart: If you have been a reader of my blog for a while, you would know that I HATE lip gloss... well well well, look who has featured lip glosses in the favourites this month!

I was sent 4 of these lip glosses to trial (I will eventually have a full review up), and I started using them everyday at work when I noticed that a full face of makeup is a little OTT. Since I haven't let mastered how to do a more toned down eye, I have been wearing my normal makeup (minus the lipstick) with one of these glosses. These are a tiny bit sticky, but they provide nice hydration, nice shine, last 3-4 hours, and they provide the perfect amount of colour - just enough to look like you are wearing something while still looking pretty natural (see arm swatches later in this post). I looked through my collection of lip products and noticed that pretty much every gloss I own is either too pigmented (why not just use a lipstick), they provide no colour, or they are too frosty... I have finally found my perfect lip gloss. Feel free to recommend lip glosses!

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette: This is a new addition to my makeup collection and I am so glad I bit the bullet and bought it. I previously had the Naked 1 and the Naked 3 and, contrary to popular opinion, the Naked 1 is my least used of the bunch. I find that the colours are lovely, buttery and pigmented, but they aren't very neutral for a "naked" palette, they are more metallic glam. I currently have a hankering for taupes, as they are more work appropriate and they suit my winter complexion a lot more than golds/bronzes, and the Naked 2 (and also the Naked 3) provide a lot more options for what I want. Some of the shades that I have been loving for all over lid shades are YDK, Suspect and Chopper (see watches below).

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick Lullabye: This is my go to pop of colour for the month, and if I have been wearing a bright lip, it has been this shade. I was lucky enough to receive it as a present from my lovely friend who went to the US at the start of August. The shade is an amazing blue toned magenta and I love it because a) its bright, and b) because this is more of a socially acceptable purple lip. I love a purple lip but don't wear them too often these days because they can be hard to wear in a lot of situations, this shade is probably the most purple you can make a magenta without it turning into a purple lipstick. This also lasts a long time on the lips. My only issue with it is that it is a little gritty because it has shimmer in it, but I can overlook that for the colour (see swatch below).

Scout Cosmetics Mineral Illuminate: Another product worthy of the favourites title is this mineral highlighter from Scout Cosmetics. I have gushed over this in my Scout Cosmetics post and my Top 5 Highlighters post, so I won't labour the point, but it is a beautiful bold but finely milled highlighter that gives a perfect glow.

Antipodes Rejoice Light Facial Day Cream: Onto skincare... I tried my first few Antipodes products in August and this light day moisturiser has been a standout product. It is a silky, thick but light, hydrating moisturiser that keeps my skin plump and soft. I have quite oily but dehydrated skin, so this is perfect because it provides the hydration without any greasy or oiliness. Check out my full review here.

Beauty Essentials Hydrated Sorbolene Cream: *Yawn* this is a pretty boring favourite, but a favourite none the less. This has been kicking around my bedroom for over a year and I was going to throw it out until I realised that I was nearly out of body lotion. If you are after a basic thick body lotion, then a cheap sorbolene cream can't be beat. This does apply quite thick and white, but I pretend that I am applying a fancy body mask at night.

Lady Jayne Elastomer Bands: Once again, a very boring and practical favourite. I am growing out my pixie cut for a bit of a change and these small rubber hair ties are a god send! I am currently sporting a pretty nasty mullet, but these tiny hair ties allow me to tie it back and hide it from the world. I am also loving tying my hair up for work because it means I don't have to worry about styling my hair in the morning (I am not a morning person).

Jar Body Scrub in Africa: Lastly is this coffee and vanilla coffee scrub by Jar. This essentially a bag of coffee grounds with a few other things thrown in. These aren't cheap and they are very messy to use, but give a great thorough body exfoliation and they smell like coffee (mmmmm coffee). I also have a sugar scrub by Jar and I wasn't a fan, so if you are going to check out these loose scrubs, I recommend the coffee based scrubs over the sugar based scrubs.

That's it for August! Check out my favorurites video below to see my favourites, fails, and other favourites.

  1. Kat- you've totally sold me on Naked2! I'm in the exact same boat, as I only have the original and 3 because I was afraid 2 would be too cool. Glad to hear it's actually quite neutral! And wow, that highlighter is gorgeous on you :)
