FAIL! Lip Monthly June 2014 Box

June 29, 2014

IMG_4858

Hey hey! I was contacted by Lip Monthly to review this new subscription box. Lip Monthly is a subscription box from the US that primarily features lip products, and it only costs $10 per month. Like most international subscription boxes, you need to also pay for shipping - for it to be shipped to Australia it costs an additional $6.

I believe this is the second box from Lip Monthly, so it is a relatively new box on the market. You can check out more information at the Lip Monthly website, and you can use the code SUMMERLIPS to get $5 off your first box.

Note: I was originally pretty excited to review this box and on first impressions I thought this was great value (see opening video below), but as I was researching each of the products while writing this post, my opinion of this box changed significantly... so please read the rest of this post before you consider signing up to Lip Monthly.

Sorry to Lip Monthly for the following review, but I have to be honest to my readers... even if you send me the box for free!

IMG_4855

You get this cute tiny little box, but because most of the products didn't fit in this box, the rest of the products came in a cellophane bag. Even though this tiny box isn't very practical... I love tiny things so I might keep it for lipstick storage.

IMG_4864

It also came with a mini information card. This card gives some basic information about the products, but doesn't specify whether the product is full size or sample, and what the price of each product is. It does mention that each box contains a Mix Up item, which is a non-lip product to mix things up.

On further investigation, I have realised that they have omitted a lot of information about each product for a very good reason... because most of these products are old stock from brands and products that have been discontinued years ago!

IMG_4868

This is what I got in the June box. There are four lip products and one hand product.

IMG_4874

The first product is the Lipology Anti-Feathering Stick. This is a clear balm that is designed to help prevent feathering of lipstick. This isn't a twist up product, so it seems like the amount you get in the tip is all of it. I generally wear long wearing matte lip products so feathering isn't really an issue for me, so I probably won't use this product. I don't understand what happens when you wear down the point... it will start applying like a chap stick. I can't find much about this in online reviews, but you can only buy this from discount warehouse websites are selling them for around $4.

The next product is by Purple Lab and it is the Huge Lips Skinny Hips plumping lip gloss. I got the shade Red Sole, which is a sheer red gloss shade.

I decided to do a bit of research about this product and it seems the all of the reviews are from around 2010-2011, and in fact the Purple Lab website is no longer up, and they haven't posted a tweet on their twitter since 2011. This concerns me. Some of the reviews were saying that the active ingredient "hoodia" can have some side effects, and even though I don't necessarily worry about side effects of ingredients... I am concerned that we are being sent old stock from 2010, of a product that is no longer available, from a company that no longer exists.

The next lip product is by LOL (Lots Of Love) and it is a lipstick in the shade Dance With The Devil. This is a sheer but buildable lipstick, and it even though it applies quite well, it definitely has a cheap teenage makeup vibe to it. Looking these up, it seems like you can buy these lipsticks for around $2 each, but hey, at least they are still available to buy!

Lastly is the Mary Kate and Ashley Lip Foils. These are highly metallic lip sticks in small chap stick tubes. They are very pigmented and impressive to swatch, but on the lips they are far too frosty. Doing some research on these, I actually can't find any Mary Kate and Ashley makeup site... and the only places you can buy these are makeup wholesale websites or ebay. Again, the only reviews of these are from 2009!

Mary Kate and Ashley Lip Foils

So all in all, I originally thought this was a great value box... and my first impressions was very positive, but on more investigation this seems like it's a box that buys discontinued old stock and charges $10 plus shipping for it.

Some people might be ok with that, and if you are then I recommend trying this box... but I personally think it's a disgrace! I do not want to pay for old expired makeup from brands that no longer exist!

I think the only thing I will keep from this box is the Essie hand sanitiser.

  2. Hmmm, seems a little dodgy to me! I definitely would be keen on using products that haven't been sold in years. On the plus side, at least you got a nice hand sanitiser out of it!

  3. OMG! That is craziness!! I was interested until I read the rest of your review ... Mary Kate & Ashley makeup was sold in Wal-Marts in the States ... but that was in the very early 2000's! And even then it was only out for MAYBE a year or two.... very interesting. Have you written the company to see what they say about the products they are selling?

  4. Ugh I was excited to think there might be a cheaper USA sub box option, but this looks gross. I get really funny about being sent old stock in sub boxes, it happens occasionally here but it's not a box full of leftovers like this! Thanks for the honest review, like you I initially thought it looked great and might have gone ahead and subbed.

  5. Oops, I mean I definitely *wouldn't* be keen on using old products!!

  6. Cheeky buggers! It is one thing to buy discontinued cosmetics knowing they are discontinued, but for them not to be open about it is really a bit shit.

    1. Its just a really shitty way of making money... subscription boxes should be about sharing current products, not selling rubbish!

  7. Wow. Did they think you wouldn't research the brands and products? I'd be interested to read their response to this. Thanks for your honesty, I will be steering well clear of this subscription box service!

  9. Just, wow. What an absolute joke. The first thing that got me was the product card, it doesn't look professional at all. I just had a look on the website, and on the front page they've got a picture which includes a Mac lipstick, Sephora lipgloss and what looks like a Clinique chubby stick... false advertising much? Judging from this box they'd never send anything of that quality.

  11. Wow without you doing this research and not just saying 'ooh shiny!' we would never have known to be cautious about this. To be honest, I never thought about the possibility these products and unheard of companies could be because they're out of business, and there's a surplus of products. Thank you!

  12. I can certainly see why your review took a nose dive. I agree with you on the cheap teenage vibe thing for the LOL lippie - don't we have those in Kmart here? I was excited at first as well, but now... not so much. Perhaps these products are from companies that have revamped themselves and are now coming back on the market vs no longer available products from defunct companies? We can only hope!

  14. Can't say I really see the point of one of these boxes if you can't buy the produc ts, isn't half the point to trial new brands? I also find it hilarious that they chose a box so small it doesent fit those products and that the one product you like is the non lip product.

    1. Agreed! Subscription boxes should be seen as marketing for current/new products... not a way throw away old products and make a profit from it!

  19. After trying so many subscription boxes in Australia, I was interested to see whether this US based box would be better. Sadly it looks like they are more profit than consumer based. Doesn't sound like they will be running for long. Thank you for your honest thoughts Kat :)

  21. That's such a shame about being older items - I'm sure so many people would have been all over this otherwise (I know I would!)
I'm also surprised that the lipstick with hoodia got past customs as they're usually pretty strict about letting that into the country. I suppose they wouldn't be expecting to find it in a lipstick though. They're running a risk of unhappy customers though if customs start stopping these packages getting through...

    1. Interesting point! I would love for customs to stop this rubbish coming into Australia :P

  22. Hi Kat,

Thanks for giving such an honest review! Hopefully Lip Monthly will be super professional about this and maybe even up their game in the future (coughunlikemodelcocough).

I think the idea of a lip box is really interesting but IMO I would rather pay a bit more to get quality, usable products. Lol cosmetics is actually available at K-Mart in Australia and yup, it's super cheap (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I would rather just pick it up for $3.) And it's really underhanded that they tried to pass off old products - I'm sure there's a market for discontinued products, but to pass it off in a sub box is really not cool!

As it is, I'd rather buy a new Shanghai Suzy lipstick for around the same cost. At least I'm guaranteed to love it.

But the packaging is super cute though!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed! Why waste money on rubbish when you can buy a Shanghai Suzy lipstick for the same price! I would much prefer to buy one new lipstick per month than get a box like this!

Hopefully they don't lash out like Model Co :P Will keep you posted :)

  23. Great and honest review Kat! What a pity that they resorted to including old items (off the shelves) items and brands that were...well no longer around. Maybe they're just looking to get rid of their warehouse stock. Bad move, considering this could've been a pretty good box!

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is a bad move because I know I have lost all faith in this company

  24. This is so crazy! I am not sure on how great lipsticks keep their quality, even if they are sealed, from 2009! That was five years ago. Poker Face by Lady Gaga was released, seriously.

As always, you are honest and transparent with reviews, and that's why you are amazing.

  27. So, just out of curiosity I went looking for review on the first box from this company and that box also seemed to have a few discontinued items. Not the best start for the brand.

  28. I was excited about this box when I first heard about it. I am addicted to lip products. But, I agree I think it is a disgrace that they would put old and discontinued items into a box. This is their second box and I don't think they are doing a good job of making a good name for themselves. I would be weary of using a product with Hoodia in it. I take herbal supplements and am very wary about taking things if I do not know what they are for. It still get's absorbed into your body through your lips. I know Hoodia is used to lose weight and does have side effects. I wonder if that is why this company is not around anymore. It seems odd to me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hmmm so dodge! Keen to hear what happens though. X

    ReplyDelete
  30. Haha I literally don't understand why any company would think this is a good idea... Are they trying to poison us?! Thanks for always being honest Kat, super respect. x

  31. Snaps to Kat for being honest. That is hella dissapointing and I agree with you, a disgrace. This is another reason I avoid subscription boxes...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow what a disgrace! After watching your video I was considering subscribing... not anymore. Fancy getting you to promote a subscription box that is such a crappy deal. I can understand why you are so upset.

I personally use these boxes as a way to become exposed to new brands and products with with hope of repurchasing if I like them. Cannot wait to see what they say!

  34. First of all, that makes me Utterly ILL thinking I would have some lip product on my lips from 2009. It's like grabbing a can or two of SPAGHETTI O'S from your cupboard that have been expired for 5 years, heating them up and praying you don't get sick! And if you are into this type of thing, what if you like the products so much that you cannot repurchase them, I would be UTTERLY PISSED about that too! I'm so glad you did your research Kit because I thought hmmm 10 dollars a month, that is somewhat a steal! Question, when you looked up the products, can you tell us if they are worth much on ebay? I'm curious about those prices vs. the monthly cost of the subscription!! Overcharged? or Undercharged? anyways i'm sure it all would work out in the long run! Thanks again!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh man.... I just found your review after I already signed up like ten minutes ago. I am not bothered by getting cheaper brands and what not. But I am quite concerned with the possibility of getting expired make up. From what I understand they are a newer subscription. I think I will try it out at least a month or two just to see how it goes. Maybe this was just one bad month and the rest will be okay with current products. (I hope). Thanks for all the info on the products. I would never have thought to investigate like this (kind of makes me want to do the same with all my subscription make up boxes)

  36. Oh lord!! I wish i found your post sooner! I just subscribed to lip monthly good it was just for half the prize i guess but this is annoying and disappointing I was searching for reviews of the boxes and I definitely felt weird about the mary kate and ashley lip products I haven't seen them for so long. I will just get this box and then cancel it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow, that is insane. I am so happy that I found your blog post, because this box seemed really interesting, but I'm not interested in getting old makeup.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm really glad I didn't give into the tons of emails they sent. 2009?!?! That's 5 years old! Way past the suggested opening date.

How can they get away with this? :/

    ReplyDelete
  39. I signed up a few days ago using the $5 code. I'm hoping they start using recent products, but if they still send discontinued stuff I will just cancel . I won't be too disappointed to get 4 lip products for $5 even if they are a little old. Thanks for the review!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hope they change their ways! This all seems really gross. :/ But, new company, room for improvement?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi,
great post! I was looking for some new boxes to sub to as I had to cancel a bunch due to not being in the US at the moment.
This reminded me of a post I wrote on my blog in 2012 when Glossybox was still in Canada and sent out expired items from third parties and went as far as saying certain big cosmetic companies had dealings with them (Revlon and Avon) when they did not.
I actually got a letter in the mail- a real paper letter from Revlon Canada in response to my contacting them about this.
Here is my post on this:
    http://prettytastyreviews.blogspot.ca/2013/01/glossybox-canada-dec-2012-discontinued.html

I even put up pics of the bar codes and other info as proof.

Instead of subs I decided to just buy some cosmetics online and a few store samplers locally.
Also some Chinese cosmetics are nice- I bought some nail polish from Mini in the box/light in the box.
The BK brand glow in the dark polishes are nice and around $3-5 w shipping, also BK brand metalic polishes are really nice and pretty!

  42. I just signed up for Lip Montly after watching another YouTuber's reveal video. I wonder if the contents are different in the states than other locations. I'm in the states and the reveal I viewed (stillGLAMOUROUS) showed different products for June. Hmmmmmmm........................

  45. It seems like they have vastly improved within the last year. The reviews from 2015 show a card with details on whether products are full sized or not as well as the price of the full sized product. They seem like ipsy now except geared more towards lips.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hrm... So I am obviously slow on the lip monthly bandwagon, I just stumbled across it online and decided to give it a go last night with out doing any research and now I saw your post. FAIL indeed. Oh well hopefully it has improved in the year since you tried them.
