Top 13 Makeup Products of 2013

January 5, 2014

I can't believe that it is already 2014! Like every other beauty blogger, before I can move on to new products in 2014, I must reflect on my favourites of 2013. I decided to split this into two posts (and videos) because I had so many favourites that I wanted to mention. This first post is the Top 13 Makeup Products of 2013 and I will hopefully have the second post which will the Top 13 Other Beauty Products of 2013 coming up in the next day or two.

Last year I did a post (see here) where I listed my favourite product from a few different categories. This year I decided to list my stand out products and to cut them down to a short list of 13. This means that I haven't covered each type of makeup category, so if you wanted to know what my favourite product was for a certain category, just leave a comment and I will happily answer any questions. I also wanted to mention that if I listed a product as a favourite in 2012, then I didn't mention it again in my 2013 favourites because I wanted these to act as a cumulative favourites posts... but there were a couple of products (Illamasqua's Naked Rose Blush, MAC's Blacktrack Fluidline, Garnier BB Cream for Oily Skin etc) that would easily make it into my 2013 favourites as well.

I did also film a video talking about each of these products, so if you prefer to watch videos instead of reading then you can find the video below

We'll start with base products...

Benefit Porefessional primer: This is the only product in these two posts that I don't currently have. I haven't repurchased it yet because I am waiting to use up some other primers so I can justify placing a Benefit order from the US. Anyway, this has been the primer that has made me like primers. Prior to trying the porefessional primer, I never saw a difference with the longevity of my makeup with or without a primer. This primer is a silicone gel that really helps smooth out pores, but what I love about it is that it actually helped my makeup from separating and wearing off around my oily t-zone, and it doesn't block my pores or break me out! If you are like me, and you don't think primers do anything... try this one!

Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 foundation: This has probably been one of my best finds of 2013. I saw so much hype about this foundation and I generally shy away from hyped up products because I often get disappointed, but I had to try it because it was getting rave reviews from people who have oily/combination skin. I love this foundation! It is a medium to high coverage foundation that gives a semi-matte finish and it lasts hours and hours without needing touch ups. Clearly this is a miracle for people with oily skin, but I have even heard great reviews from people who have dry skin and who love the coverage and the longevity of this foundation. I think this is so much better than the Estee Lauder Double Wear (which can look quite cakey and breaks me out) and the Revlon Colour Stay (which is difficult to apply and is very tacky on the skin), and it retails for under $20 and is often on sale. I bought my first one in June or July and I have gone through about a bottle and a 3rd of this foundation... and for someone who has a collection of foundations, I can't believe I have been consistently reaching for one foundation so often!

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Skin Conceal: 2013 has been the year of concealers for me. I have tried quite a few (and loved quite a few) but one that stands out is the OCC Skin Conceal. This is a firm cream concealer that is very very pigmented. I use this on blemishes and under my eyes and covers beautifully and stays put. My only downside is that I have to mix two shades (Y1 and Y2). Y1 is fine on its own if I want to highlight under my eye, and Y2 is find on its own if I am fake tanned, but I need to mix them together to get my skin tone. You can also see from the photo below that one shade difference is actually a huge difference! Most people will need to mix shades which is annoying, but what is good about this range is that they have a huge range of shades from virtually white to very deep brown. They also have a Y range which is yellow based, and a R range which is red based. These contain 8g of product (and you need the tiniest amount per application) and retails for $20 from Lipstick Republic.

Moving onto blush/bronzer/highlighter...

Illamamsqua Powder Blusher in Lover: Since I can't mention Naked Rose because it was my faveourite blush of 2012, I will mention it's sister Lover. Lover is a matte soft peachy shade that is very finely milled, has perfect pigmentation and gives the cheeks a nice natural flush of coral. Very easy to use and very pretty!

NARS Blush in Luster: My first introduction to NARS blushes was Orgasm, which I wasn't really a fan of. When I was in Japan I decided to buy a couple of NARS products since they were similar to the US prices. After some debate and research, I decided to buy Luster. Luster is a peachy nude shade that has a gold sheen to it. When I started using this I fell in love with it. What I love most about it is that it sculpts your face, adds a coral flush, and highlights all in one. When I wear this I never bother with bronzer or highlighter because this seems to do the job on its own.

NARS Bronzer in Laguna: I had a mini version of this bronzer and I used it up within about two months, and because I was so impressed I went out and bought the full size straight away. This is a bronzer that contains a slight shimmer and is a nice warm brown shade without being too orange toned. I mainly use this as a contour, but it also makes for a really nice all over bronzer. Most people look at this and wonder how a shimmery bronzer works as a contour, but the shimmer doesn't really transfer onto the skin, and it does look really natural. This will be a bronzer that I will always have in my collection.

MAC Mineralized Skin Finish in Soft and Gentle: I was at MAC earlier this year and I randomly decided to swatch Soft and Gentle to see what all the fuss was about. I swatched it on my hand along with a few other Mineralized Skin Finishes, and then a couple of hours later I realised that the Soft and Gentle swatch was still on my hand but the others had worn off. I couldn't get this highlighter out of my mind, so of course I had to buy it later that week. This is a pretty champagne nude shade that goes with any makeup look. It is very shimmery, so it's not for the faint hearted, but if you apply this with a soft brush you can get a natural glow. Since this is so pigmented it can also work as a shimmery eyeshadow. I have accumulated a lot of good quality highlighters this year, and this is by far my favourite. See review here.

Finally, lips and eyes...

MAC Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger:  I have been lusting after this lipstick for some time now, and as it is a pro shade it can be hard to track down. When I was placing a MAC order I decided to buy this and I am so glad I did! This is a bright orange toned matte red which looks incredible on the lips. Even though it is a matte finish, it is really comfortable to wear and lasts hours. This is by far my most favourite red lipstick in my collection, and if you are into orange toned shades then this is the red for you! Check out my blog post on this shade here.

Lime Crime Lipstick in Countessa Fluorescent: If you want a bold pink lip, this is the one to go for. I generally love Lime Crime lipsticks, I find that the formula is creamy and pigmented, but this is the stand out shade! This is a bright mid toned blue based pink and it is amazing! This is my most used bright lipstick of the year for sure and it is one of those lipsticks that you will get heaps of compliments about. See my full review and swatches of this lipstick here. I buy my Lime Crime lipsticks from Lipstick Republic.

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow Liner in Marry Up: It's bitter sweet mentioning this because I want to rave about it, but it is a discontinued shade. This is the most perfect warm bronze cream eye shadow that applied smoothy, is crazy pigmented, and lasts all day without creasing and it doesn't need to be set with an eyeshadow. I think these creaseless cream shadows are miles ahead of Maybelline Colour Tattoos or most other cream shadows on the market. I wish they brought out this shade again!

Benefit Marry Up, MAC Lady Danger, Lime Crime Countessa Fluorescent

Rimmel Scandaleyes Khol Kajal Liners: When I was thinking about what liners I loved most, and these came to mind. I have 6 of these Rimmel Scandaleyes liners and I adore the formula and the shade range. These are super creamy and pigmented, and they set waterproof. I use these to create a smokey liner or I use them in the waterline. These are also really affordable at $9.95 each (and often on sale), and I would not recommend any other pencil liners!

Lancome Hipnose Star Mascara: This is a bit risky putting it in my favourites since I haven't used this mascara for months now, but it was the only mascara that I thought "wow, this is an amazing mascara!". I did recently purchase one in the boxing day sales, but I thought it was worth a mention because I have tried some good mascaras this year (including MAC, Benefit, Smashbox etc) and this was my favourite. If you can find these on sale in Christmas packs, I would recommend you getting one asap, but they are very pricey on their own.

Smashbox Kaleidoscopic Collection palettes: Last but not least, these are my absolute favourite palettes of the year! Once again, I have tried some great palettes (Inglot, Sugarpill, The Balm, Ben Nye etc) but these are the stand outs! I have the Flash palette (warm toned) and the Sparks palette (cool toned) and there was one other in the Smashbox Wonder Vision Christmas collection called Cosmic which I didn't end up buying in store... but I did end up caving and I ordered it off ebay last night :P . These came in a pack with a liner and a mascara, but the palettes were the stand out of the pack! There are 6 shades in each palette, two matte, two metallic/sparkly, and two shimmer/satin. The quality is amazing and you can easily do a whole eye look using just one of these palettes, which is really rare for a palette. If you come across these Christmas packs by Smashbox, I highly recommend you buy them for the palettes! I did a full review of the Sparks palette here.

So those are the stand out makeup products for me in 2013! I there is also another post coming with my top 13 other beauty products (skincare, nails, hair etc) and that will be up in the next day or two.

Let me know what your all time favourite makeup product for 2013 was! I would love to get suggestions on what to try next!

  1. Great list :) NARS Luster is on my next-to-buy list of their blushes. I really want to try out the Porefessional too as so many people rave about it. That OCC concealer is so reasonably priced, and looks great! If you're looking for another NARS Blush to try - I'd recommend Madly, it was my top cheek product of 2013 (http://www.mishellesleepytime.com/2014/01/top-13-products-of-2013.html)

  9. I am so glad to hear that you like it better than the colorstay. I have been wondering how this compares to colorstay. I am not liking colorstay these days as it can look bit too much,
