December 2013 Favourites

December 28, 2013

I was debating whether or not I should do a favourites post this month, as I am planning on doing a top 13 products of 2013 post early next week (after a bit more deliberating). I decided that I really wanted to mention a few of the products I have been loving in the last few weeks, as they are pretty uncharacteristic of what I have been wearing over the last few months.

This month has been really long for me! I finished placement (which felt like I was there for a year, but it was only 3 weeks) and since finishing placement I have been running around catching up with friends and getting Christmas organised. Over the last few months I have generally been wearing really warm and summery makeup - bronze/gold toned eyeshadows, bronzer etc. But for some reason I have completely changed my taste in makeup over the last two weeks. Even though it is actually Summer here in Australia, and the weather has been really warm, I have been wearing sparkly cool toned eyeshadows with liquid liner, a pink cheek (no bronzer) and just a lip balm... which is pretty much the type of makeup that I like wearing in winter (maybe it's some weird Christmas spirit thing). My favourites this month is all the products that I have been wearing on a daily basis over the last two weeks, and also a few Lush Christmas limited edition products that I adore.

Lush Celebrate Body Lotion: I am so upset that this is a Christmas limited edition product (and it has been sold out at Lush stores). This is a very thick body butter type moisturiser that contains orange oil, lime oil, cocoa butter, almond oil, and cognac oil. This smells like a zesty fruit cocktail. This is really thick and greasy so I only use it on my legs, but it smells and feels really nice. Luckily this contains heaps of product and you only need to use a little at a time, so hopefully this will last me a while. Damn you limited edition products!

Smashbox Cream Liner in Putty: This is a cream liner, but it's really shit as a liner! I bought this on ebay for around $17 with the intention to use it as a brow product, and it's turned out to be one of my favourite products to fill in my brows. I have had this for quite some time now, but I recently hit pan and for some reason that has encouraged me to use it more often. It is a cream product but it is a really nice grey toned brown and I just find this is really quick to apply but it gives a bolder brow than a powder and a softer look than a brow pencil. You can't buy these in Australia (and if you did it would be $35+) so I might need to track it down another one on ebay.

Stila Custom Color Blush in Self Adjusting Pink: This is one of my all time favourite blushes ever! I use this a lot in winter when I love wearing cool toned pink blushes. This gives a really pretty flush to your cheeks, but it is really bright so you need to be light handed when applying it! This has been working well with the cooler more taupe/mauve shades of eyeshadow that I have been wearing this month. See swatch later in this post.

Bobbi Brown Caviar and Oyster Palette: My friend bought this for me as an early Christmas present and I have been wearing it for the last few weeks. I would love to review it, but it's a limited edition palette that is no longer available (my friend works for Estee Lauder so she has access to all this fun stuff at the corporate store). This has eight cool toned nudes (some glitters, some mattes, some satin shades) and it also has a really sparkly highlighter/blush under the eyeshadows. I have been using the sparkly taupe brown shade (second from the left on the top row - see swatch later in this post) often with the matte taupe shade below it as a crease shade. This makes a really nice nude but sparkly eye and then I use liquid eye liner over the top. The sparkly shades aren't very pigmented, but when you pack it on its really pretty. I never thought cool toned shades suits my colouring, but this palette looks lovely and has changed my view of (some) cool toned shades.

Smashbox Eyeshadow Palette in Flash: I included the Sparks palette in my November Favourites post which is a warm version of this palette. I was giving away one of these cooler more purple and taupe toned Flash palettes as part of my Christmas giveaway, and when I was in Kit Cosmetics the other day I decided to pick one up for myself since I love the quality of the Sparks palette and I am starting to like cooler toned shades and I really don't own many. I love this Flash palette as much as I love the Sparks palette! The quality is awesome (and I don't have to wear a primer with them!) and this palette contains glittery shades, matte shades and shimmer shades and I can comfortably do a lot of different looks using just this palette (which is quite rare for a small palette). I have mainly been using the two mid-toned glittery shades (see swatches later in this post), much like I have been using the Bobbi Brown sparkly shade. If I can find the blue/taupe version of this eyeshadow palette I might need to buy it to complete the set :P

OPI Can't Find My Czechbook: I normally buy more pastel blue nail polishes, but my boyfriend bough this and I love it! It is a beautiful mid-toned bright aqua shade and I think he picked this because this is pretty close to my all time favourite colour.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Light: I don't know why I haven't mentioned this concealer on my blog before! It is a pigmented creamy concealer that I can use under my eyes or to cover blemishes. I reach for this really often and I thought that its about time I give it the credit it deserves. I also love the doe foot applicator. If you want a really good all-round affordable concealer, this one is great!

Illamasqua Medium Pencil in Vow: Since I have been wearing a sparkly pink/mauve/taupe eye and winged liquid liner, I have also been using a nude pencil on my waterline. This is the liner I have been reaching for, and this is the perfect shade of nude liner for my skin tone. See swatch below and review here.

Eye of Horus Liquid Define Eyeliner: I almost forgot about this eyeliner! I have had this for a while but have only recently rediscovered it this month. This is one of those felt tip liners that are really quick and simple to use. The difference with this one is that it actually doesn't budge once its set. I often find that liquid liners start to run if your eyes water (which mine do when I'm really tired or when I am out in the wind - which happens quite often, strangely enough), but this one stays looking perfect. I have been wearing this most days. See review and swatches here.

Lanolips Lip Ointment in the shade Rhubarb: I love this lip balm, it is thick, not sticky, it smells almost like caramel, and it has a very soft pink shade to it. Since I have been going quite bold with my eyeliner and cheeks, I have been reaching for this often and it does not leave my handbag! This also has an SPF of 15 which is great for summer! See swatch below.

Lush Rose Jam Body Wash: I am not the biggest fan of rose scents, but I adore the Lush Ro's Argan Body Conditioner and this is the body wash with the same scent. Sadly this is another Christmas limited edition (I picked up two large bottles) and I love using it because it has a sweet rose scent with a hint of lemon and it reminds me of the body conditioner (yes I am obsessed with that body conditioner!)

Illamasqua Vow liner, Eye of Horus liner, Bobbi Brown shadow, Smashbox shimmery taupe shadow, Smashbox sparkly mauve shadow, Lanolips Rhubarb lip balm, Stila blush

Above are pretty much a sense of the shades that I have been wearing this month.

Those are my favourite beauty products for this month! Let me know what your favourites were, and also let me know what your favourite products for 2013 were!

  7. Just picked up Rose Jam on sale at lush and my goodness. So good! That Stila blush looks perfection, and I am such a sucker for gimmicks like the 'self-adjusting' pink tone. I have the cream blush from Bourjois that does that, I am not even sure if it does anything but I love it :P Great post as always.
