Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Creams in Rio-D and Ma-Li-Boo review and swatches

November 10, 2013

If you are in Australia and you love makeup, you no doubt would have heard the hype about the new Velourlips Matte Lip Cream by Australis. These are rumoured to be a dupe for the Lime Crime Velvetines (see my review of the Suedeberry Velvetine here), and since I own both of the Velvetines that Lime Crime currently have available, I was curious to see if these in fact were a more affordable dupe.

These contain 10ml of product, they come in 5 shades (pink, orange, nude, red and purple) and they cost $9.95 full price in Priceline.

I picked up the shades Rio-D, which is a bright neon orange, and Ma-Li-Boo, which is a neon blue based pink. The packaging of these are a typical lip gloss plastic tube, and they apply with a doe foot applicator.

top: Rio-D, bottom: Ma-Li-Boo

You can see from the swatches that they are very matte and they are quite pigmented. The colours I chose are also very bright and almost neon on the lips. The formula itself is a cream, and if you want an opaque finish you do need to either apply a thick coat or two thin coats. My only issue with the formula is that because it applies quite thick, it tends to feel quite thick, dry and cakey on the lips.

So you can see that on the lips they do look quite impressive. I love the look of these and I adore the shades, but what I don't like about these is the way it wears off.

These last for a good 4 or so hours on the lips, but after an hour they tend to start wearing off and start looking quite patchy. I prefer products that wear off evenly, so if you forget to reapply then you don't need to worry about looking ridiculous - this is definitely not one of those products.

The above photo shows how Ma-Li-Boo wears after about an hour and a half. You can see that the part closest to inside of my mouth starts coming off and it starts to wear off in the creases too. This just gets worse and worse the longer you wear it.

This patchiness is because this is a very dry and long wearing formula, so I completely understand why it happens, but I find that it makes these Velourlips much harder to wear on a regular basis and it also makes it a very high maintenance lip product. What is also annoying is that you can't touch up the product because it creates an even worse chunky cakey finish, so if you want to touch this up you need to take it off with makeup remover and reapply it - once again, high maintenance.

This is not unique to Velourlips, Lime Crime Velvetines also have the same patchy wearing off and problems with touching it up. The only reason why I think Velvetines are more successful as a matte lip product is because instead of applying like a thick cream, they apply like a very runny liquid, and they are so pigmented that you only need to apply the thinnest layer to your lips. What that does is that it prevents the product from getting too cakey and the uneven wearing off happens much later than it does with the Velourlips.

You can of course wear a thinner coat of this to make it wear a little better, but then you don't get the full pigmentation. You can also wear a lip gloss over the top, but that defeats the purpose of wearing a a matte product.

So all in all, this is a fun product if you are only going to wear this for a couple of hours when you go out or if you are ok with an uncomfortable and high maintenance lip product. Personally I love the look of these, but I can't see myself reaching for these too often because I hate wearing difficult lip products. These are similar in finish to Lime Crime Velvetines, but they aren't as successful as a long lasting matte lip product. Sadly, I don't think these are worth the hype.

  1. I'm glad I read this! I was going to go out and purchase all the shades because I couldn't decide what colours I wanted to try lol but if they're similar to the Velvetines I'm not interested. They are fair to high maintenance and there are so many better matte lipstick formulations out there that I'd prefer to buy. Great review as always Kat :)

  2. I got the nude one and I really like it :) But I haven't yet tested it for a full day, only an afternoon (at a Baby Shower). I will have to see how it fairs, but because I didn't need thick application it probably helped. Great review :)

  5. Ooh, love how vibrant and pigmented these are! But I agree, the patchy wear is a bit annoying. Thanks for the review :)
