November 2013 | KITSCH/SNITCH

So far I have only bought two Christmas packs, one was from MAC (see review here) and this one is from Smashbox. This set comes in three shades; this one is in Sparks which contains a warm toned palette with golds and coral shades, Flash contains purples and silver shades, and Cosmic cotains blues and taupes. These retail for $48.95 each at Kit Cosmetics.

I actually bought three of these packs, of course I bought this Sparks shade for me, but I also bought one to give away and also a Flash shade to give away - so if you want to enter my giveaway to win one of these two pack check out my post.

This comes with a 6 shade eye shadow palette (this is the only thing that varies in each pack), a Limitless Eye Liner in Onyx, a Full Exposure Mascara in Jet Black and some cards showing various eye looks.

So this isn't the cheapest pack in the world, but for Australian Smashbox prices it's pretty damn good. This mascara alone normally costs $28.95, generally the eyeliners retail for around the same, and I am sure that if this eyeshadow palette was sold separately it would retail for well over $40, as their eyeshadow trios (which contain 3.4g of product compared to this palette that contains 4g and 6 shades) retail for $39.95.

The thing that sold me on this kit was the eye shadow palette. When I swatched it in store, the gold shade was so buttery smooth that I thought it was a cream shadow. So lets start with the eyeshadow palette...

This palette is a very cute hexagon shaped packaging that contains 6 triangles of shadows. I think the packaging of this is super cute and I love the shades because they contain a mix of metallics, mattes, and satin shades. I can easily do a whole eye look using this palette, without having to reach for another palette, which always makes a palette more user friendly in my opinion. If I used cooler toned shades or bright blues often, I would have no hesitation picking up the other palettes.

l-r: Peach, Gold, Coral, Bronze, Cocoa, Bare

This palette contains:

Peach: This is a duochrome peach shade that looks peach but reflects a soft gold shade. This is quite a sheer but pigmented shade

Gold: This is a very buttery metallic gold shade. This is a super intense shade but it has the best formula of the 6 shades.

Coral: This is a more satin finish coral shade, and I have been loving using this shade as a crease colour because it adds more warmth to a neutral eye look.

Bronze: This is one of those shades that have an almost matte/satin base but some flecks of fine gold glitter. This is actually very pretty and doesn't create any fall out.

Cocoa: This is a matte chocolate brown that makes this palette very wearable. This is great for the crease or the outer corner.

Bare: This is a matte warm peach toned nude, and it matches my skin tone really well. I mainly use this as a blending shade.

This also comes with these suggestions on how to use the palette. I guess this is a good idea if you aren't sure how to use more than one eye shadow at a time (I know a lot of people who are worried about applying numerous eye shadows).

My personal go everyday look using these shades is using Nude all over the lid, Peach in the inner corner, Coral in the crease, and some Cocoa or Bronze on the lash line/outer v. Gold I use whenever I want a fun bold look.

The mascara is pretty good, it is one of those ones that have a traditional mascara brush. These days I personally prefer the spikey brushes, but nevertheless there is nothing to complain about this mascara. It separates and lengthens lashes and if you apply one coat you can get a nice natural look, but if you apply more coats then it starts to build up volume and look more dramatic. I wouldn't run out and spend the $28.95 on this mascara alone, but I do enjoy using it.

The eyeliner is a nice pigmented black and once it sets it doesn't budge. It is pigmented but it isn't super soft, which I know some people will like and others won't. This is soft enough to smudge out and use on the waterline, but it isn't as soft as something like the Rimmel Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal eyeliners.

So overall, I love this pack. The mascara is good, the eyeliner is good, and the eye shadow palette is amazing! If you want to check this pack out then you can find it at Kit Cosmetics, otherwise enter my giveaway!

Smashbox Wonder Vision Eye Set in Sparks

My Lust Have It box arrived quite late this month, I was getting reports from friends saying that they got theirs last week and I was starting to get worried that mine wouldn't turn up. It finally arrived yesterday and I was pretty pleased with the contents!

For anyone who isn't aware, this is an Australian beauty subscription box that costs $19.95 per month and you can join up here. Use the code "kitsch" for $5 off your first box

Lately LHI have added quite a few cards to their boxes. There were three in this months box (besides the information card). The cards are shown above and one is about a free session at Benefit, one is a gift card to Hello Fresh, and the last is a Davroe deal. For people who don't know what Hello Fresh is, it is a service that creates recipes and delivers them with the ingredients to your door so you can make the meals. I will be keen to try it!

The information box that comes in the card is below, and it lists all the items I received in this months box along with a description and retail price of each item.

Lonvitalite C3 Collagen Firming and Moisturising Facial Mask - 1 mask: These masks pop up in subscription boxes a lot these days. Personally I prefer to use cream/mud masks compared to these cloth ones, but I will give it a go.

Aveda Botanical Kinetics Toumaline Charged Hydrating Cream and Exfoliating Cleanser - 50ml samples: These are very expensive products! I used both last night and the exfoliating cleanser is ok, but I much prefer the hydrating cream which is really thick and is a perfect night moisturiser. Both of these smell very earthy (aka a little like dirt) but I don't mind the scents. These tubes will also last quite a few uses, so you can definitely try before you buy.

Mary Kay Limited Edition Mary Kay Pedicure Set Energizing Foot Scrub - full size: Foot treatments are always the things that I forget to buy. This scrub is part of a pedicure set that contains a food soak, a food scrub, a food balm and a pedicure brush/pummice. In this November LHI box you can receive one of the four products that are in the pack. I really like the idea of this pack because maintaining your feet is really important leading up to Summer and sandal weather. I like this foot scrub but it does smell a bit weird, its like a mix between citrus and mint or menthol, but its nice none the less. I am going to have to research where I can get this pack.

Davroe Wellbeing Treatment Replenish - full size: This is a brand that hasn't features in LHI boxes for a while, they used to always include Davroe products back in the day and I remember a lot of people getting sick of them. I personally am a fan of Davroe hair care, so I was happy to see this treatment in this months box. This is a full size hair treatment and its works a bit like a deep conditioner. This smells just like the Palmer's Shea Butter, which is quite strong and floral. I used this last night and I do like it, it made my hair soft but quite volumous. This tube is quite small for a full size product though, and I can imagine it only lasting a few applications.

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Gent;e Exfoliating Facial Scrub - 15ml sample: I was hoping that this would smell like cocoa, but it smells more like soap. This does scrub really well and if you like a strong exfoliant, then this is for you.

Benefit They're Real Mascara - 3g sample: Finally I am trying out this mascara! I am sure that this will be the most exciting thing from this months box for most people who receive it. This is one of those mascaras that have a spiky brush (see photo below) and they tend to be really good at adding volume to your lashes but not making them too clumpy. I am wearing this today and so far I like it, but it's not the best mascara that I have ever tried.

Mary Kay Thinking Of You Eau De Parfum - two one-use samples: Lastly we were given two one use samples of the Thinking Of You perfume by Mary Kay. This perfume comes on a little towelette that you can wipe of your skin. I find this to be slightly too floral and I can imagine this scent being one of those ones that give me a head ache.

Overall this is probably one of the best LHI boxes that I have received in the last few months. What did you guys think of this box?

Also remember to enter my Christmas giveaway!

Also remember to enter my Christmas giveaway!

I have only recently started getting into NARS, not because I haven't wanted to previously, but because NARS is pretty damn pricey here in Australia. My first experience with NARS was when I received a mini Laguna bronzer and a mini Orgasm blush from a giveaway that I won (see review here). I still have the mini blush but I used up the Laguna bronzer in a matter of months (which is always a good sign that a product is good!). Since then, I have bought a blush, a highlighter and an eyeshadow when I was overseas, and when I was in need of a bronzer I decided to splurge and buy a full size NARS Laguna.

So after reading my life's story, here is my review of the Laguna Bronzing Powder by NARS. I know that this is a very popular product and the internet really doesn't need another review of it, but here I go!

I bought this at Mecca Cosmetica for $55 which is more expenive than a NARS blush ($45), but you will see later in this post that the bronzers are a lot larger than the blushes. There are 3 shades of bronzers in this range, and Laguna is the middle toned shade.

The packaging of the Laguna bronzer is the same as all of the NARS packaging. They come in a square container that is covered in black rubber, which feels nice but can get quite grubby. Each product also comes with a good sized mirror in the lid.

As you can see from the photo above, these bronzers are much larger than the blushes/highlighters, they contain 8g of product instead of 4.8g of product that the blushes have.

This is a warm brown that seems to have a hint of green in it, almost like how a good fake tan has a green tint, and this makes it a perfect contour and bronzing shade for people who have light to medium skintones. This will probably appear too warm on people with super fair skin.

This does have a hint of a sheen, which you can see in the swatch above. This sheen luckily doesn't look shimmery or sparkly on the skin and doesn't stop this from being the perfect contour shade as well as a bronzer. What I also love about this bronzer is that the formula is quite firm yet nicely pigmented, so you don't pick up too much on your brush and means that this bronzer should last you years of use.

This is definitely one of those "worth the hype" products!

NARS Laguna Bronzing Powder - worth the hype!

This is my third Wantable box and when I received my first box I was super impressed, but sadly I have become less and less impressed as I received my second and third box.

Wantable is a makeup subscription box that is based in the US, and the makeup box retails for $40 a month for a one off box, or $36 a month if you are subscribed. Shipping to Australia is an additional $9... which makes this box cost a minimum of $45 to Australia. This isn't cheap, but if you want a subscription box that just sends makeup (and full size makeup products) then this may be worth it for you. When I first signed up, they guaranteed 5 full size makeup products but that has been reduced to 4 full size products this month which is a shame.

When you subscribe you go through each makeup item and you select what products that you love, like, and dislike and you don't get sent products that you dislike. If you want to see more about the selection process, check out the review I did on the first box I received here

So now that they send four makeup products and a sample, this box was looking a little empty this month. I also had seen reviews of other peoples November box and they received cool things like a full size perfume and concealer palettes, but sadly I didn't get either of those.

Michael Marcus Shadow Prime: The first thing I got was from Michael Marcus, and before Wantable I had never heard of this brand but I have received a Michael Marcus product in my last 3 boxes which is a bit of an overkill. This is a firm cream type product that is flesh toned and so far so good. This retails for $24. See the swatch later in this post.

Whip Hand Cosmetics Cheek Flash Loose Blush In Beachhouse: I have never heard of this brand, and although I love blushes I really don't like loose blushes because they are super messy. If I decide to give Wantable one last try I will have to change my blush preferences so that I "dislike" loose blushes. Nevertheless, this is a really pretty shade (see swatch at the end of this post) it is a shimmery bright berry toned pink and even though this is extremely messy, I did use this today and I really liked the look of it. This is great if you love pigmented shimmery blushes. This retails for $18.

Color Club Nail Polish in Brrr-Red: I love nail polish, but I was very disappointed when I saw this shade. It is a very pretty shade but I have received 4 berry red nail polishes from Wantable in the last 3 months (see photo below) which is way too much! All of these shades individually are quite nice, but they all look very similar on the nails and it is really annoying getting so many. You can also see in the photo below that I said in my preferences that I love neutrals, reds, darks, brights, and multi... so why am I only getting red? If I decide to get next months Wantable (which is unlikely at this point) I will change that reference to dislike reds! This retails for $8.

29 Cosmetics Reserve Moisturising Lipstick in Smoking Cab: This is a nice pigmented berry lipstick that is really smooth to apply and lasts really well on the lips. I did also receive a berry lipstick in my last months box, despite saying that I loved all lipstick shades, but this is still a nice lipstick. This retails for $25, and see the swatch below.

l-r: Michael Marcus Shadow Prime, Whip Hand Cosmetics blush in Beachhouse, 29 Cosmetics lipstick in Smoking Cab

Skiin Instant Skin Tightener and Liner Filler sample: I probably won't be using this sample since I (knock wood) don't have lines to fill just yet!

So that's it. Despite being very open with my preferences and saying that I am happy to receive most products and most shades, I am finding that I am getting the same things over and over again. Because of that, and the fact that they have reduced the box to 4 products instead of 5, I really don't think I will be continuing getting this box in the next few months. It is a great idea if you are starting out a makeup collection, but I really don't need a fifth red nail polish or another berry lipstick to add to my already large collection of nail polish and lipstick. I guess I signed up to this box for some variety, but sadly I am not getting it.

Do you get Wantable? What did you think of this months box?

Check out my first Wantable box here, and my second Wantable box here.

Do you get Wantable? What did you think of this months box?

Check out my first Wantable box here, and my second Wantable box here.

I love skincare, and lately I have been really appreciating good quality French skincare brands. I haven't previously delved into Gatineau... possibly because its not the easiest to find in store and as far as I know you can only get it on the Gatineau website, but I was lucky enough to receive this Aquamemory Moisture Replenish Mask to try out. This retails for $65 or 75ml and according to the Gatineau website, this contains:
  • Sea fennel extract 0.10% & Platymonas 2% for deep down hydration
  • Pure hyaluronic acid 0.02% & NMF complex 1% which instantly moisturises the skin's surface
  • Brown algae extract and trace elements 1% & relipidifying sea fennel extract 0.10% to reinforce surface hydration by limiting and transepidermal water loss.
  • Protective Complex 0.55% & Vitamin E to boost the skin's natural defenses and protect against free radicals

So this is a mask that is designed to hydrate dehydrated skin. I personally have oily combination skin, but because I am pretty bad with drinking water, my skin is often dehydrated. I have been applying this twice a week for 10-15min at a time and I have been really enjoying it.

I like the way this product dispenses, it is a squeeze tube that allows you to dispense the amount of product you want. I am not the biggest fan of the design of the packaging, only because it looks pretty simple and doesn't scream high quality to me... which it should at $65 a tube.

The product itself is a blue gel that has a nice clean scent. I like to use a small amount of product (around a pea size) and it is enough to cover my whole face. This gel is very cooling and leaves my skin feeling nice and plump within minutes. I have noticed that my skin is smoother and is much more hydrated now that have been using this mask. I you want an instant pick me up with within a short period of time and with little fuss, I recommend this mask!

I am definitely interested in trying more Gatineau products now. Have you tried Gatineau products? What would you recommend me trying next?

I had little MAC splurge the other day and I decided to buy the limited edition Stroke of Midnight Eye Bag in Nude. This is the first MAC limited edition bag that I have seen in the last couple of years that I have really wanted! Usually when they bring out these packs, there is at least one product that I don't want/already have in each pack. I will use everything in this pack so I decided to snap it up before it sells out.

One thing that I love about this collection is the design of the makeup bags. These are definitely Great Gatsby inspired and they are black with white and gold stripes. The inside of the bag is patterned like the inside of the box above.

So besides the bag, in this kit you get a Fluidline in Past Twilight (limited edition), a double ended brush (limited edition), an In Extreme Dimension Lash mascara, and a Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Utterly Becoming (limited edition). This kit costs $89, but the Paint Pot, Fluidline and mascara alone would cost over $100 so this is a good value pack if you are going to use everything in it.

The two products that I was most excited about were the Fluidline and Paint Pot. I love the Fluidlines that I own, and I have probably had my one in Blacktracks for over 3 years now and it hasn't dried out. I find gel eyeliners are much less messy to apply than liquid and I like that they dry matte. This Past Twilight shade is described as a blackened plum and it almost looks black in the pot, but what I love about it is that it's not as harsh as black because it has a nice warmth to it. I have used this everyday since I bought it and it is a great alternative to black if you love wearing warmer eyeshadows. I wish this was a permanent shade! I thought I should quickly mention also that even though this is a limited edition shade, the packaging is the same as the usual Fluidlines and the only difference is that the sticker at the bottom is clear instead of the usual black sticker.

I only have one Paint Pot in my collection and it is a shimmery gold shade so it's not an everyday shade, so I was super keen to pick this Utterly Becoming shade. Utterly Becoming is also a limited edition shade and it is a matte nude beige that has a pink undertone. I love this shade, and like the Fluidline, I have worn this every day since buying it. This is slightly darker than my skin tone but it is such a flattering shade, and I have been wearing it with a matte crease colour and the fluidline for a nude everyday winged eyeliner look. I love that this does not crease if you wear it on it's own, and it also works as a really nice base for eyeshadows.

Top: Utterly Becoming, Bottom: Past Twilight

I have never tried this In Extreme Dimension Lash mascara in Extreme Black, but in the past I have really liked MAC mascaras, the only thing I don't like is the price tag. This is a great mascara for everyday bold lashes, it has a large spiky wand (see photo below) that does a great job a separating and lengthening lashes. This doesn't add heaps of volume, but it still looks great. I also find that this is a pretty crunchy feeling mascara, but it doesn't flake, and I think it's pretty good at holding a curl. Oh but it smells weird, like paint or something.

Lastly this comes with the makeup bag and a double sided brush. I personally am not a fan of double sided brushes because I like to keep brushes in mugs and one side is inevitably going to get crushed. I will save this for my handbag makeup bag because it will be handy for touch ups. I like that this has a side that can apply the Paint Pot (even though I use my fingers for this) or a eyeshadow, and it has a liner brush for the Fluidline, which suits this pack perfectly! This brush also has a white and gold handle which matches the makeup bag which is very cute!

So overall, this pack isn't cheap, but it is the first pack that I have seen form MAC in a long time that contains very everyday and versatile products. I love everything that has come in this pack and I can't recommend it highly enough!
