Revlon Whimsical....... meh

June 25, 2013

I bought this mini Revlon nail polish for about $7 while I was in Japan. I had heard a lot of good reviews of this Whimsical shade, and since it is not available in Australia, I was really happy that I found it. There was a lot of hype around this polish because it's a cheaper dupe for Deborah Lippmann's Glitter In The Air.

This is a very sheer milky light blue (almost grey toned) jelly base with light blue and light pink glitter (both large and small flecks).

One coat... meh
Two coats... eh
After FOUR coats!

This nail polish is hard work! It is so sheer that you need at least four coats to make it look ok. At four coats you can still see your nail underneath... and if you have stained nails, this looks hideous!
This reminds me of what it looks like when you are really cold and your nails go blue.

The overall effect can look really nice, and I like the concept, but I refuse to put more than four layers of one nail polish, so I think I will have to wear this over a opaque pastel shade when I use this next.

What do you guys think? Pretty and sparkly or dead fingers?

  1. Hmmm not a fan! I like the sparkle colours but the base colour isn't very flattering. And four coats... Not worth it!

    1. Yeah agreed, over a base it should look nice, but it still dosn't have enough glitter in it!

  2. Interesting, I like the pastel and shimmer bits but its too sheer and too many layers are needed! The shade is a bit too dead and would be a very pretty zombie costume shade!! ^^

  3. It looks like it would be a nice color but wow so sheer! I hate having to layer more than 2 coats for a polish to look good.

    1. Same, and even it I apply it over a base, there still isn't enough glitter in two coats

  4. It's a shame that it's so sheer.
I absolutely love the shade though!

  5. I have glitter in the air - I use it as a top coat on a light blue polish such as Essie's borrowed and blue. It looks gorgeous. Not so much on its own though.

  6. I agree with you, it does look like dead nails... with glitter. Hmm maybe it's a good thing they're not available here in Aus so we didn't go out and spend $15+ on it!

  7. I don´t use it on it´s own, I usually but China glaze for audrey as a base and then 1-2 coats of this and the result is so much better than pictured here. I think this polish is meant for layering, you should try it! ;)

  9. That's rubbish it took 4 coats to get that amount of sparkles and colour pay off.
It would be cool over another nail varnish if it had more sparkles, but can imagine it to be a bit annoying with all that faffing :(

    Juyey xx

  10. Oh wow, I never realised how sheer this polish was! Maybe try layering it over a similar blue colour :)? Will probably work best as a top coat! xx

  11. I adore whimsical. It looks beautiful when layered on blue/aqua polishes. I agree, it's hard work on its own, but I personally think it's worth it. I will be very sad when my bottle runs out.

  12. It's like Revlon got really realy close to getting it right, but just didn't hit the mark. I love the chunky glitter, its one of my favourite looks at the moment, but this one hardly seems worth it!

  13. Sorry this was a disappointment! It really is so super sheer- needing 4 coats is crazy! Thanks for the review :)
