Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder - review and swatch

March 17, 2013

I just wanted to do a quick Sunday morning post on a product that I have been using a lot recently, the Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder. Everyone had heard of the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation, but I haven't seen any blog loving about this powder. I bought this powder when it was on sale, but normally it costs $20 from Priceline. The reason why I thought I should blog about this, is because it's a great powder that I have really been enjoying using, but there are some things about this powder that are worth mentioning before you decide to buy it.

Ok so I got this in the shade 53 Beige, which is the same shade as the Healthy Mix Serum foundation that I was using. Sadly I have finished my Healthy Mix foundation, so I can't swatch a comparison for you. This comes in the same shades as the Healthy Mix foundations, but I need to mention that I find this powder applies a lot darker than the foundation shades. When you first swatch this, you think mmm not a bad shade, but when you apply it over a foundation it instantly darkens, it must darken when applied to a tacky surface! I don't mind that this turns dark, but in the future I will definitely buy a much lighter shade.

Tip: If you are thinking of buying this powder, buy a shade or two lighter than your Bourjois foundation shade!

This foundation is very finely milled and is really nice and soft. It is also a very pigmented powder, which is a lot different from the Rimmel Stay Matte powder which I was using before this. You can easily build this powder up to create a lot of coverage, which works well for people who want a lot of coverage, or for people like me who like to wear light foundations but want to have a flawless finish. I think because this powder is so finely milled, you do use it up quite quickly. I think I have maybe been using this powder for a month, and it has already significantly hit pan.

One last thing that is worth noting is that this doesn't create a matte appearance for 10 hours! I don't think it does a great job at mattifying the skin. This may be disappointing for some people, but it does leave the skin with a more semi matte-satin finish, which I think looks really nice, and probably suits more people.

Pros:
  • Great coverage
  • Same shade range as the foundations
  • Soft powder
  • Satin finish

Cons:
  • Applies darker than the foundation
  • Doesn't give a 10 hour matte finish

Overall I am loving this powder! It definitely has it's flaws, but once you adjust for them, then you will love using it!

Have you tried this powder?

  2. Looks like a great powder! I'm not a fan of powders that are totally matte, I'd rather go for a healthier finish! Great review xoxo

  3. I'm using this right now but in #52 - I'm glad I bought a shade down, though #53 in the Healthy Mix Serum is a bit too dark for me (I usually mix with a bit of #52 to make it lighter). I like how soft it is though I agree, it doesn't last that long. However it's nice it provides a bit of coverage long with setting foundation and mattifying shine.

  4. I've just started using a powder with my makeup, and this might have been a nice product to try seeing as my current powder is almost finished, but I'm usually shade 51 with the healthy mix foundation so I'm not sure I'll be able to use this, haha. It would have been nice because I use powder to add a bit of coverage, not so much to mattify my skin.

  5. Thanks for the review- this sounds lovely! Nice that the coverage is adjustable and that it doesn't have a totally flat finish. And thanks for the tip about going a shade lighter! :)

  7. I've been using this powder in the exact same shade for about 4 months and i haven't had hit pan yet lol. I don't apply make up everyday, i might stay 3 days out of 7 without make up. I love this powder. you're right, it does go darker, i noticed it right away, but as you say, i don't mind, love to have some color ;). It doesn't keep your face matte all day long, when you touch up it can go cakey. But not to forget it is also a hydrating powder so that's why it doesn't give you a matte finish. when i finish, i'll purchase it again, maybe in a lighter shade. In summer this shade is great though. :*

  9. I have this powder in 53 too! And I completely agree that it darkens- just thinking "so it wasn't just me?!"- I was wondering why it was a little patchy and wiped it off before leaving the house the other day. I've got the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundations in 52 and 53 because on their own, they don't match (was influenced by Lena from sleepandwater to get both after she started mixing them) and I love them. The smell is nice too!

  11. I found this really useful, I was just wondering whether you prefer this or the rimmel stay matte? What skin type are you?
