January Favourites 2013

February 1, 2013

It's the start of February and it's time for January favourites! These always creep up on me, but luckily I was thinking about my favourites last night before I fell asleep, so I was slightly more prepared today, and hopefully I haven't forgotten anything.

So for a quick background to my makeup favourites, I cut my hair pretty short last month and I have been changing up my makeup because what I used to usually wear doesn't really suit me now. I have been contouring a lot since more of my face is on display, and I have been loving a simple copper/bronze eye with a lot of mascara (see photo later in this post), rather than a neutral eye with a lot of eyeliner which is what I used to wear.

Eye of Horus Goddess Mascara and Liquid Define Eye Liner: I have been loving this mascara, it creates dramatic lashes, but is clump free and separates the lashes really nicely. This is great for a dramatic eye if you don't want to wear much eyeliner, which is what I have been doing lately. If I do want to go out and make my copper look for evening appropriate, I just add some of the liquid liner and I'm good to go. This liner is really pigmented and is waterproof so it stays on all day and night without any issues.  See review and swatches of these here.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in 012 Bronze: I love this range of liners, they are great quality and they are really affordable. I have been getting a lot of use out of the bronze one this month, mainly on the waterline. It's a great alternative to black liner on the waterline. See swatch of this in the photo below.

Lorac WILD FOR TANtalizer Eye Shadow Palette: Since I have been loving bronze eyeshadows, I have been reaching for this palette a lot. My favourite shade this month is Tigris, which is the most copper toned bronze of the quad. All of these shadows are really pigmented and apply easily. I do find that these four shades are quite similar and can blend into each other and look like one shade if you apply them all in one look, so I like to use one shade at a time. See swatch below, and see review of this palette here.

Lush Colour Supplement in the shade Light Yellow: This is by far my favourite base product of the month. I mix a little of this with my foundation each day and it adds a bit more thickness to a liquid foundation, and it adds a bit more coverage too. I find that a little of this turns a good foundation into a great foundation. See review of this here.

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in Marry Up: Not only have I been using this as an eyeshadow base, but I have realised that if you use this with a liquid liner brush, this can make an amazing inner corner highlight for a dark eyeshadow look, and it works beautifully as a cream shadow under the lower lash line. I tried to replicate this with Bad To The Bronze and Bold Gold from the Maybelline 24 hour Color Tattoos, but I find that they don't work as well, because they are drier products and are more chunky... they definitely aren't as creamy and smooth as the Benefit ones. But if you love a strong inner corner pop of colour, I recommend trying cream shadows, because they work so well!

Benefit Cream Shadow in Marry Up, Lorac Tigris eyeshadow, Rimmel liner in Bronze

So above is an example of how I have been using these products. I have Benefit Cream Shadow as a primer and concentrated on the inner corner and under the eye using a liner brush. Lorac Tigris is all over the lid, and the Rimmel Bronze liner is on the waterline and on the lash line of the upper lid.

Lippy Girl lipstick in Sassy Ass: I have been introduced to these Lippy Girl Lipsticks this month (see my full review here). My favourite shade is Sassy Ass which is a virbrant pink in the tube, but applies more like a sheer lip butter. It feels really nice on your lips, and it gives a pop of neon pink, but is really wearable. Love it!

Lippy Girl Sassy Ass
Revlon nail polish in the shade 230 Popular: This is a nice nude pink shade with some subtle silver glitter. This is a fun nail polish, but its really easy to wear, and it can be layered over other nail polish too. See swatches here.

China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy: This is an amazing shade! It is like a neon coral that looks like it would glow in the dark. I have worn this a few times last month, and I will need to do a post on it ASAP!

NARS Laguna Bronzer Mini: I lastly have been loving NARS Laguna Bronzer. I was a NARS virgin up until last month when I won a mini Laguna and a mini Orgasm blush (see post here). I was a little skeptical about how Laguna would work as a bronzer since it has gold shimmer, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have been contouring most days since I cut my hair, so this has been getting a bit of a work out!

Onto skincare and haircare...

Davroe Styling Formation Lotion: This is a gel that I picked up a while ago (see review here) and I have been so dependant on it since cutting my hair. All I do is rub though a little of this gel before I dry my hair, and once it has been dried, it stays in place without being crunchy, sticky, heavy, or anything like that... it just makes styling hair really easy!

Invisible Zinc Environmental Skin Protector: I am so slack with sunscreen, usually I make sure my day moisturiser has SPF and if my foundation does too, then that's a bonus. I bough this Invisible Zinc sunscreen a while ago when I was working outside and was getting sun burnt frequently. I haven't touched it since, but I came across it when I moved house, and decided that I may as well try to use it up. I have been using this under my foundation most days in January, and I have been pleasantly surprised that it hasn't made me break out or get overly oily, like most sunscreens do! This is really thick and can take a bit of effort to work into your face, but its SPF 30+ with UVA and UVB protection, so I feel like I am doing a good thing for my skin whenever I use it.

Apivita Express Beauty with Grape: This is an eye mask that you leave on overnight, but I have been using it on my whole face, and the next morning my skin feels amazing! It's pretty expensive, you get two sachets for around $7.50 or $7.90... but I can generally get two uses out of each sachet, and I see it as being a cheap facial.

One Skin System Daily Hydrate: I have had this moisturiser for a while now, but I was waiting to use up a few other moisturisers before I started using this... I really like this moisturiser, it smells lemony fresh and almost has a peppery scent to it, it sinks into my skin really nicely, and it doesn't cause any greasiness. I use this under the Invisible Zinc, and they work quite well together! I do think the packaging is a little fiddly, but the product is good. See my review on this moisturiser here.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser: Last but not least, this is my favourite cleanser of the last couple of months... I was supposed to include it in my last favourites, but I forgot! I love using this cleanser in the morning because it has a strong eucalyptus scent that really wakes your skin up! It is a thick cream cleanser but makes your skin feel so bright and awake! I love it! See my review here.

So that's it! What are your favourite products of January?

  1. Lovely favourites!
I so agree about the Benefit cream shadows, they are so much creamier than the Maybelline color tattoos which are like, solid! o.o

  2. The swatches of the eye shadows and liner look really nice! I would love to see a NOTD with Flip Flop fantasy, it looks like my kind of colour!
You can see my favourites here http://sailor-klerr.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/january-favourites.html

  3. Wow, great favourites! I'm especially tempted by the Lorac Palette and the China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy- will be keeping an eye out for these in summertime for sure :)

  4. Loving the abundance of bronzey eyeshadows :) the Benefit Marry Up looks beautiful, and I agree about the formula - they're thinner but easy to build xx

  5. Benefit Marry Up and Lorac Tigris look absolutely beautifull together!!
