Disappointing Product Review: OPI Just Spotted The Lizard

February 26, 2013

I got this nail polish mini in my David Jones Deluxe Sampler Tote (see review here). There weren't many shades to choose from, but I was tossing up between this shade and a dark grey shade, but I chose this one because I thought the oil slick gold/blue/purple looked amazing in the bottle. I have since looked up this shade and I believe it is called Just Spotted The Lizard and is from the Spider Man Collection.

The above photo is of two coats of the polish, and sadly, it didn't turn out anywhere near what I was expecting! This is a gold nail polish with an olive hint... so it pretty much looks like a light "old gold". I love sparkly nails, but this has highlighted how much I dislike most metallic shades.

So as you can see from the photo above, this looks primarily gold but has a green hint where the shadows lie. Overall it just looks like a metallic olive gold shade that you might expect a hip grandmother or a mother of the bride to wear... there are definitely no blues or purples that are obvious in the bottle, and frankly is a let down.

The colour aside, the formula is ok. I used two coats, and you definitely need two coats because the first shade is quite sheer. This isn't streaky, but because of the metallic finish, you can see brush marks if you aren't careful (which you can see in the photo above). I don't know how this lasts because I took it off after a day and a half, but I can say that there was no wear or chipping in that time.

This nail polish is a let down for me, and all I could picture when I saw it were those horrible duo shimmer formal/prom dresses that people wore in the early 2000's! Bleh, I should have got the grey shade!

  1. It definitely looks much prettier in the bottle than on the nails :( That's such a shame it didn't work out for you! xx

  2. Guh I've had my eye on this polish for as long as I can remember, everyone praised it as a Chanel dupe and I've tried tracking it down for so long! Such a shame it's not as beautiful on the nails as it is in the bottle, totally agree about the duochrome dresses, seen enough of those to last me a lifetime! Blergh, it's a real shame :( xxx

  4. I hate the streaks and lines you get in metallic polishes. It's always such a let down.

  5. Haha those pictures at the end killed me because I totally had a purple/pink dress like that in 2000. I really wanted this polish so thanks for the review! I think I'll pass.

  6. Still a nice polish, but not near the complex duochrome that appears in the bottle! And I totally remember that style of prom dress- they were everywhere when I was in high school. Horrible, indeed! :)

  7. That's so disappointing, it looks much nicer in the bottle than on your nails. It always confuses me when there's such a huge difference in the colour in the bottle and when its applied. Definitely not a colour I'd want to wear.

  8. Awh man! I seriously have been lusting after this polish! Such a shame that it's an "old gold" because in the bottle it looks like it had SO much potential! :(

  9. I've heard so much about this polish!
Too bad it doesn't look the same like in the bottle :( The blues definitely would have made it look great!

  10. I find that this happens a lot with duochrome polishes or at least the ones that look like duochromes. Happened to me when I bought a Topshop polish - looked amazing in the bottle like this one but came out an olive gold shade.

  11. I saw this a while ago and didn't buy it because I knew how it would turn out. The key to remember when choosing metalic nail varnish is always look at the spot on the bottle where the light hits it (for example, in your image...that is the front of the bottle) and that is a good indicator of what color your nails are going to be primarily.

At least it looks cute in the bottle if nothing else.

  14. Wow! It looks so different in the bottle, if only that shade transferred onto the nails!! Such a shame.

  17. That's so weird, almost everyone I know who has it loves it! Maybe it just doesn't suit your skin tone. Even so, I still think it's a good color on you! Maybe its just because you don't like metallics.
