Wet n Wild Greed Palette - review and swatches

January 9, 2013

Yesterday I blogged about my e.l.f. makeup brush collection that I recently bought from BeautyJoint.com, well in that order I also bought this Wet n Wild palette which cost $6.99. I was originally going to buy three Wet n Wild palettes, but the shipping started costing too much so I did a big shopping cart cull and I only bought this Greed palette. I chose this one because it seemed like the palette that I would get most use out of, and if I loved it then I could always go back and order some more. What caught my attention about this palette is the left side that contains some great wearable matte shades.

I originally thought this was going to contain three mattes, and then three shimmery shades which allowed you to do a matte look, a shimmery look or a combination. According to the back of the palette, this contains three matte shades and three "effect shades". After swatching the shimmer shades, they really aren't shades that you can do a whole eye look with... I guess they are just "effect shades", that allow you to add a little dimension to the look? I can see myself using the matte shades a lot, but neglecting the "effect shades".

It is hard finding smooth and pigmented matte shades, especially affordable ones, but these are a very nice surprise!

These are such great shades! They are really soft, easy to blend, and the colour pay off is really nice. If you want a classic winged eyeliner look, you can use the lightest colour all over the lid, the peach shade in the crease, and the black on the lash line. Otherwise the peach shade can be used as a lid colour and the lightest colour can be a matte highlight. You can do a lot with these three shades, and I can see myself reaching for these often. The only thing to be aware of with these shades is that they can create some fall out, which is common with soft eye shadows.

So I thought this shimmery side of the palette will have a highlight colour, a lid colour and a dark shade, much like the matte side, however it instead has two very light sparkly shades, and one dark black with silver glitter. The first shade is a light purple with a fine green glitter, the middle shade is a peachy pink with a fine gold glitter, and the black is similar to the matte shade but contains silver glitter. This are not shimmery, they are definitely glittery, and if you don't like glitter, then you won't like these three shades.

You can easily use the black for a sparkly smokey eye, but I am finding it harder to figure out how to use the two lighter shades. They don't have very good colour pay off and are quite sheer. I could see myself using the pink as a highlight shade, but once again, it is very sheer so it would be a very subtle highlight. The purple is strange, it is a pretty shade swatched, but I don't know what to do with it. This could be a very very sheer lid colour, but its too sheer for my liking.

Overall, I LOVE the matte side, but I am a bit confused about the "effect" side. This palette would be unstoppable if it had a nice butter shimmery version of the matte shades instead of these "effect shades". I will still get a lot of use out of this palette, but I can't see myself hitting pan on the "effect" side anytime in the near or distant future.

Do you have this palette? What are your thoughts on the "effect shades"?

    1. I will give them a go, but I think Wet n Wild could have chosen better shadows.

  2. It's great that the mattes are really smooth and pigmented. I've found it difficult to find cheap, quality mattes, but these look fantastic!

  3. Wow, this looks like such a handy palette! I'm always most drawn to the shimmery shades; it's a shame that these are super sheer. I'd probably layer the shimmer shades over top of the matte colours to give some extra dimension. Hope you can find a way to make them work! :)

  6. I love the look of this, and I'm definitely going to have to buy it once my 100 day spending ban is over! The effects are definitely strange, but I kind of like them (well, the black one is amazing anyway) and I'm sure I'd find uses for the other two somehow.. :P
