Popping my NARS cherry - first impressions of Orgasm blush and Laguna bronzer minis

January 11, 2013

Look what came in the mail yesterday! I won these mini NARS products from the lovely Tara, from the blog Still Blushful. I thought this was a great idea for a giveaway, and I didn't expect to win since there were over 3000 entries! These are my first NARS products, and I know that sounds strange coming from a beauty blogger, and I always wanted to try NARS, but because they are quite expensive and hard to find in Australia, I never really got to play with these in the shops, and I never took the plunge and ordered some online. I like to think winning Tara's giveaway was the universe telling me that I needed some NARS products in my collection.

I am sure you are all familiar with what the packaging looks like, it's made from a nice feeling matte rubber (which supposedly gets pretty dirty) and contains a good size mirror. These are the minis, which contain 2.5g of product instead of the normal 4.8g. I don't know how much the minis cost, but you can get the full size blushes for $45 and the bronzers for $55 in Australia at Mecca Cosmetics.

Orgasm

Orgasm is the most well known NARS blush shade, and is described as a peachy pink with shimmer. Laguna is also the most well known bronzer, and is well suited for lighter skin tones, and this is described as being a brown with gold shimmer.

Laguna

These are quite smooth products, and are definitely not powdery. Laguna contains quite a bit of gold shimmer, which I wasn't expecting since most people use it as a contour shade, but the shimmer is more like a fine gold sheen rather than chunks of glitter. Orgasm is pretty glittery and has a lot of peachy gold shimmer.  Both are easy to blend, but I was surprised at how sheer Orgasm was.

Orgasm and Laguna heavily swatches
Orgasm and Laguna applied with a brush

Orgasm: I needed quite a lot of layers to show the colour in the heavy swatch, since this blush is pretty much a shimmery pinky gold with very little base colour. You can see from the blended out shade that this creates a nice very soft pink on the skin, with a lot of shimmer.

Laguna: This bronzer was much more pigmented than Orgasm, and it was easier to build up the colour. In the blended swatch you can see that it gives a nice sheen to the skin, which looks lovely, but is not usually something people go for when contouring... so I'm intrigued!

Sleek Rose Gold, NARS Orgasm, NARS Laguna, MAC Harmony

I decided to do a quick comparison with Sleek's Rose Gold, since I have heard that this is a good dupe for Orgasm, and I decided to compare Laguna with MAC's Harmony, which is my normal contour powder.

Rose Gold is definitely more peachy than Orgasm, but it is just as shimmery. The shimmer in Rose Gold is more yellow than in Orgasm, and Rose Gold was significantly more pigmented - it took only one swipe to get this pigmentation, compared to Orgasm which took about 5 layers.

Laguna is definitely more gold toned than Harmony, and you can see how matte and dark Harmony is compared to Laguna. I am curious to see how this works as a contour, because the amount of shimmer almost goes against what people look for in a traditional contour shade. Laguna is very pretty though and I love the gold glow it gives the skin.

Overall, I am very happy that I finally have my hands on some NARS products. I am surprised by how these products performed compared to what I expected of them. Sure, this is just a first impressions post, but I was expecting Orgasm to be more pigmented, and I didn't expect Laguna to be so shimmery!

EDIT

Here is a photo I just took of me using the blush and bronzer combination. I used the bronzer to contour and then the blush on the cheeks (der!). I am impressed with Laguna, I didn't think the golden shimmer in it would work as a contour, but amazingly it looks really natural, yet you can get quite a sculpted look. Orgasm is quite sheer, but gives your cheeks a pink flush. I really like this combination, and I don't often wear contour because it can look a little unnatural on my skin tone, but I think I will be using this more regularly because it is really easy to apply and gives a great effect. What do you guys think?

Have you tried this blush or bronzer? Do you have any other NARS favourites?
Ps sorry for all my orgasm spelling mistakes, I corrected a few but I am sure there are still more "organsm" hidden in my post.

Also remember to enter my giveaway here, only a few days left to enter!

  1. ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PAIRING HANDS DOWN! And I think my jaw hit the floor when I say how much you'd have to pay for them if you wanted to buy it! That's insane! I love NARS but sheesh that's a lot! I'm glad you won and got to try them out! :) I have one other NARS favorite and it's the Miss Liberty high lighting blush. There's a review on my blog if you want to see! It's so pretty and glittery :D xx

    1. Yeah makeup in Australia is stupidly expensive... even for basic things like Revlon! I will get more NARS in the future, but I will probably test some in store and then buy them online! I will have to check out Miss Liberty :)

  2. I love my NARS orgasm but haven't tried laguna. I am kind of surprised the blush isn't very pigmented too when I first got it I was dissapointed, but now it's my favorite blush by far :)

    1. Yeah I can imagine the sheerness being quite versatile and natural looking, but I was expecting a really bold shade :)

  3. They both look really good together!
The bronzer looks really good even though I'm not a fan of shimmery bronzers!

  4. Orgasm is a really nice blush, but after your comparison with Sleek's Rose Gold I think I'd prefer that (mainly because of the price difference!)

    1. I can't agree more, it's like an eighth of the price!

  5. I just recently got both of these too. Orgasm is the sheerest NARS blush I own by far, but I'm glad because I think if it was more pigmented it would be a tricky colour for me.

Laguna looks fantastic on you. I'm still figuring out how to wear it, shimmery bronzer is a little out of my comfort zone.

    1. The shimmer doesn't show too much on the face, so it can be used as a contour.

  6. Both of these really suit you, they look great :) I have Orgasm but don't use it very often, I have a lot of other blushes I prefer. I do use Laguna a little bit more though :)

  7. I was new to NARS until fairly recently as well, and now I'm a little bit hooked :p I really want Laguna despite the shimmer, I think it's such a classic and popular bronzer! Orgasm is sheer and very shimmery, I prefer Deep Throat :)

    1. Definitely try Laguna, it blends into my skintone better than a lot of matte bronzers. The shimmer doesn't show up much at all, i think it gives the skin a nice glow. i haven't tried Deep Throat, I will definitely try it soon!

  8. I love my Orgasm Blush - I've actually hit pan on it after owning it for around 18 months, but I will be repurchasing another.

I really want to try out Laguna this year as I've read so many great things about it! :)

  9. I love Laguna for contouring. I also didn't think it would because of the shimmer but it's gorgeous xx

  10. Yay! Your first NARS experience is an exciting milestone! ;)

Love the way you've paired the two- Laguna really does look great as a contour and Orgasm flatters your skin tone nicely!. I own several NARS blushes, my favourite being Deep Throat. Slightly more peachy and less frosty than Orgasm. I also love Amour, Dolce Vita, and Taj Mahal.
