OCC Lip Tar in Super NSFW and Black Dahlia review and swatches

December 12, 2012

I saw that Lipstick Republic have just started selling the new OCC Metallurgy collection, so I had to place an order! I really wanted Super NSFW, and I was thinking of getting another one until I saw that Lipstick Republic also stocking the Heroine Collection, and I have been wanting Black Dahlia from that collection for aaages! Lipstick Republic is the only Australian online store that I have seen so far that stocks these two collections. These cost $16 at Lipstick Republic, and you can get 10% off your purchase with the code RepublicVIBs

As per usual, Lipstick republic ship super quickly, and I think I ordered this on a Friday and I received it on Tuesday. They also wrap the products really nicely and they include great little freebies - I received a Lime Crime eye shadow primer sample, which is such a handy little freebie to get.. you can tell I have ordered from this site often when I get a cute little card like this. I also received two little OCC lip brushes, which are perfect for applying lip tars.

Super NSFW - I have already decided that I am going to wear this on Christmas, and probably New Years. It is a bright pink based red that has a gold shimmer, and is described as a "gold laced red" on the OCC website. This does have the same semi matte/satin finish as the other lip tars, but the shimmer makes it look a lot more glossy on the lips.

Black Dahlia - This is a very dark berry stain, and is described on the OCC website as "blackened red". In my opinion this is more of a purple, because if you blot the colour onto a tissue, it does come out purple (see photo of my mug below). This is quite a versatile shade, because you can apply it very lightly to create a light berry stained look or you can add gloss to make it a sheer berry gloss, or you can apply it very heavily and it can look almost black, and all the options in between. This is once again a satin type finish, but if you do blot it a lot and rub it into your lips as a stain, it does appear more matte.

As this shade has shimmer, it is very easy to apply evenly, and it is quite opaque so it does hide any dry patches or any flaws. It is a stunning red that reflects gold in the light. This shade also makes a really pretty shimmery pink lip if you apply a very small amount and work it into the lips.

Originally when I applied this, I naturally applied it quite lightly, but I decided to add a second layer to let you guy see what it looks like with a slightly heavier application (you can make it even darker if you wish). The second lip swatch is how I would prefer to wear this shade, which is applied more as a berry stain. I did not exfoliate or moisturise my lips before applying these, so you can see that this can cling a little to dry patches and has the potential to apply a little unevenly... so this requires a little bit of preparation and caution when applying, but once it is on, it does not budge for hours and hours and hours. If you wanted to apply this heavily, I would also recommend wearing a lip liner. In the second photo it looks like my lips are a little dry, the lip tars don't feel dry, but because I rubbed this into my lips with my fingers, it did take away the satin finish.

Overall I am very happy with both of these lip tars, of course I am probably most excited for brand new the metallic range, and I wish I also ordered the fuchsia shade!

One thing that I did also order was something to include in a new giveaway that I will be hosting when I hit 200 subscribers! Hint: I have just reviewed it, and it's super!

  2. Both of these are absolutely gorgeous! I bought my first Lip Tar last week (in Strumpet, a deep berry shade), but came close to buying Super NSFW as well. A perfect holiday shade. Black Dahlia is so tempting too... thanks for the helpful swatches :)
