Adorn samples - Illuminators and Cream Blushes

November 12, 2012

As part of the Lust Have It October box (see review here), there was a $15 Adorn Mineral Cosmetics voucher to spend at http://adornmineralcosmetics.com.au/. All of these products are free from all the bad things (parabens and toxins etc), are vegan, organic and Australian made and owned... which pretty much means that they are also pretty expensive. I was going to spend my voucher on a full priced product, but I wasn't sure which one to try, so I decided to get samples instead, which cost $2.50 each. The full size illuminators cost $35 each and contain 7g of product, and the cream blushes, which also double as lip stains, cost $45 for 7g of product.

So I got samples of the illuminisers in Natural and Bright White, and the cream blushes in Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring.

I must admit, when I got these in the mail I was a little disappointed. These are the type of samples that you can get at Myer or David Jones for free, I was expecting little set pots of the product, instead of scrapings... I mean, come on they charge $2.50 for each of these! I also find that these are harder to use because of the scrapings... you almost have to just pick up a chunk and hope its not too much product, and if it is too much, you end up wasting a lot of the product. I think these samples won't do the products justice, and by sending out samples in this way, it will prevent people from wanting to use them, and to appreciate the product. The full size of these will be easier to apply because its easier to control the amount you are picking up, and it will apply more evenly.

This is an example of roughly what I was expecting to get from the samples. This is a photo of the Lime Crime eye primer sample that I got free with an order from the Lipstick Republic website. Samples should not be a money making thing, they should be advertising. If your samples are good, people will buy the full size, if they are bad then people won't waste their money!

The labels on the jars were also a little annoying as I ended up having to run a sharp knife along the label to be able to open these jars... I did try to rip one off and it ended up messy, and I thought if I pulled the label off each of these, I will have no idea whats what.

Above are swatches of the illuminisers, the left photo is without flash and the right photo is with flash. The left swatch in each photo is the Natural and the right swatch is the Bright White.

These illuminators are cream products and do apply quite evenly, although they are pretty sheer. The Natural is a pretty nude pink shade, and the Bright White, in my opinion, is more of a strange grey. I'm very happy that I got samples of these, because I was very tempted to buy the full size version of the Bright White, but the website makes this out to be an actual white (see photo below), and it clearly isn't. If I did buy the full size, I probably would have been very disappointed. I do like the Natural shade, but it is a little too subtle for me.

Once again, I am very happy that I ended up getting samples before buying these, mainly because I liked the look of the Winter blush from the website (see photo below), which shows the blush to be a soft peach, but in real life it is more of a copper! All of these blushes are shown to be more pink toned on the website, but in real life they are more bronze/copper toned. These are smooth to apply (even though using the scrapings of the product was a little difficult), and of course these can sheered down to make a more subtle look on the cheek. These don't have any obvious shimmer to them, but they do have a very fine shimmer that creates more of a sheen. If these colours were more like the images on the website then I would probably be more inclined to purchase a full size product, but as it is, I don't like copper or bronze blushes, and although I like the Spring colour it is too light to show up on my cheeks... the only one I may consider getting is the Summer.

I also tried these on my lips, and in my opinion, this product is way too dry to be a lip product, it clings to the dry patches and does look uneven and unflattering - and once again, if this did work as a lip products, I think Summer would be the only colour I would even consider putting on my lips.

Overall, I am a little disappointed in these samples, they didn't feel special, and if I didn't have the discount card I would feel very ripped off (I do still feel a little ripped off for having to pay for the shipping!). These products didn't look as good as they did on the website, and they didn't really live up to their claims. If you were interested in trying any of these products out, I would recommend the Illuminiater in Natural, and the Cream Blush in Summer... but that's it. At least the little sample containers will come in handy!

I'm not saying that this is a bad brand, or that you shouldn't try their samples, I would however suggest that you get a powder product or a liquid product if you are thinking of buying the samples. Liquid and powder samples may be easier to apply and may work better as samples.

Did you get this discount card in the Lust Have It box? What did you choose?

With my LHI card I purchased some samples as well the other day and cannot wait to receive them.
I also choose both the bright white & natural illuminisers, 3 Eye Create Intensive shadows in "Amethyst", "Jasper" and "Obsidian", Brow Define Brow Dust in fair and Hydrating Cream Foundation in fair.

How long did the shipping take?

  2. I'm glad you've done a review on these before I spent money on samples. I got one of the eyeshadow samples in my bellabox last month and it was such a small amount of product (especially for the container) that I was wary about spending money on them. The blushes are disappointing, they look so nice on the website (I was thinking about getting winter, not any more).

    1. I was the same with winter, it doesn't look copper on the site! If you did want to use that voucher, choose wisely with a full size product!

  3. I got a sample of the natural illuminiser and it's about half of what you got. :-( I ordered a few eyeshadows, brow dust and a primer which I'm quite happy with. $7 shipping was a bit of a jip though. Oh and they also put in a little sample of tea which I thought was cute.
