My holy grail spot treatment: Mario Badescu Drying Lotion review

October 16, 2012

Time for a product rave! I don't often fall in love with products and give them the title of a "holy grail item", but I am so impressed with this product, I almost want to scream it from the roof tops. I have combination oily skin, and I have been battling with spots since I was a young teenager. I always thought that by the time I am in my mid 20s I will never get a pimple again, but life isn't that easy. I have at least three different spot treatments in my bathroom at this very point in time and they either don't work, or they do work but they leave hideous dry red patches on my face, so I never use them. I heard about this Drying Lotion by Mario Badescu while browsing the internet and I decided to invest in it to see if it works.

I bought this at Kit Cosmetics in Myer for $26.99. I know you can get it online at Beautybay.com and other sites for $25.49, but I thought I would just buy it in person since online isn't much cheaper than in store.

This is what the Mario Badescu website says about this product:

The Drying Lotion is a fast acting, effective acne spot treatment. Formulated with salicylic acid, calamine and other quick-drying ingredients, this product will shrink ugly whiteheads virtually overnight while you sleep. While other acne spot treatments can irritate and dry delicate or sensitive skin, this product is safe and effective for all skin types.

How to Use: Before bed, after cleansing, toning and moisturizing apply a dab of lotion directly on the whitehead using a cotton swab. Do not rub in. Let it dry and rinse off in the morning. DO NOT shake the bottle and apply only the pink sediment on the skin.

Beauty Tip: Great for back acne and breakouts on the chest. The Drying Lotion will also take the itch out of mosquito bites fast!

Some of the active ingredients include:
Calamine which is designed to sooth the spot and prevent itching
Camphor which is an anti-inflammatory
Colloidal Sulfur which reduces the oil glands activity
Salicylic Acid which is an exfoliant that alleviates congestion in the pores

So the way you use this lotion is by dipping a cotton bud into the mixture, so that the lip of the cotton bud touches the pink sediment, and then dab the product onto your spots. I think the point of this method is that the pink sediment is applied to the problem area and the yellow liquid surrounds the area (see photo below). You apply this before bed and the wash it off when you wake up. This product has a strong scent to it, it smells like alcohol and smells very medicinal.

Some people may not like having to go to bed with pink spots on their face, and would prefer a clear product, but I personally like that you can see the product. The first reason why I like seeing this product is because you know which pimples have been covered and which haven't, I also just like covering up my spots... I don't like seeing them! You also see how much you are applying, which makes it easier to cover the problem areas and not the surrounding skin. Lastly, I like that you can see that it is still on, often I will put this on an hour or so before bed, and I like seeing that it is still on when I go to sleep. Sometimes you can still see a little bit of it left in the morning which makes me feel like it's doing it's job all night. The only down side to this product is that I occasionally worry that I might knock the bottle and spill the product while I am putting the cotton bud in, but that is a really minor down side to a great product.

I bought this product about two and a half weeks ago and I saw changes in my skin the very next day, not only does this dry out the pimples, but it calms the redness down, and I haven't had any issues at all with dry patches of skin where I have applied this lotion. This is the calmest and most effective spot treatment I have ever tried. I was religiously applying this on my skin every night, but it has cleared up my problem areas so well that I only need to apply it once every couple of nights when I find new spots appearing. This product is a bit more expensive than other spot treatments, but it worth it! I have wasted so much money on spot products that I don't use, and because you use so little of this product every night so it will last a long time. I will repurchase this over and over, and I am tempted to clear out all my other spot treatments that I will never use again.

  1. I love this too! Have been using it for months and love it. Not so wonderful for travel though. Have you tried the origins spot remover? I have heard some people saying they like it better than this one. Seems hard to believe!

    1. I havent tried the origins one... I might try it in the future, but since I really love this one, I don't feel the need to try other things yet. I might try the origins one if/when i get bored of this one :)

  2. Great review! I've been eyeing up this product for awhile (have used MB's Buffering Lotion on and off) but have worried about the alcohol content, as my skin is a bit sensitive to it. Nice to hear that you're finding it calming, though! I may have to give it a go sometime soon :)

  6. I love the Mario Badescu range and have been using this product and the Healing cream for about 5 years now. It is hard to find in UK as most outlets stock it for a year or so and then never again, so when I find a stockist, I bulk buy.
