August 2012 Empties!

September 7, 2012 Melbourne VIC, Australia

Wow thats a lot of empties! I love writing empties posts, mainly because I can give you an honest review of these products. Thats not saying that when I do reviews on new products they are dishonest, but often it takes a while to see the problems in products and so I find empties posts are more accurate. In additon that that, I rarely review a lot of these products, I generally prefer to write reviews on makeup, so it gives me a chance to have a quick say about all these products that I generally won't do an individual review on.

Lets get started!

John Frieda Precision Foam Colour in shade 4N Dark Natural Brown
In saying all of the above, I actually did a review on this product a few months ago, which you can see here. I like this hair dye, and this is the third time I have used it. It is more expensive than normal hair dyes (approx $22), but it is almost fool proof. When I used to dye my hair with liquid dye, I used to get dye drips all over the walls and floor, but this foam formula doesn't have that problem. I also dye my hair once every 2 months + so the extra $5-7 that you are spending on this foam dye it's too bad. My mum and sister have both used this and they have said that after washing the hair dye out in the shower their nails started peeling. That hasn't happened to me, but that may be the main negative about this hair dye if it does make your nails peel. I will repurchase this dye.

Dove Summer Glow Beauty Body Lotion - Medium to Dark Skin
I have had this from Summer last year (December-ish), and you can tell its old because I am so pale at the moment that I wouldn't dare buy a medium to dark skin gradual tanner now! I pulled this out last week to put on my legs, and it worked well without any streaking. Unfortunately I only had two applications left in the bottle. It does have a hint of the fake tan smell, but its not too noticeable since it's masked by a fresh scent. Since it's Dove, the moisturiser is really moisturising. I would consider buying the lighter version of this again, and maybe building up to the medium/dark, however I do have a full bottle of a Sportsgirl gradual tanner, so I won't be running out to buy another Dove one just yet. I would repurchase this.

Palmer's Shea Butter
I love Palmer's, but I am a cocoa butter gal. My mum bought me this when she saw that it was on sale, so I'm not sure how much it cost. The formula is fine, its as good as cocoa butter, but it has such a strong floral scent, and I'm not a big floral fan. If you don't like floral scents, or you don't like heavily perfumed moisturisers, then don't buy this. I did have it sitting in a cupboard for a while, and I pretty much only decided to use it, because I wanted to use it up. I got used to the smell, and didn't have a huge problem with it after a while, but I wouldn't repurchase it.

Dr Lewinn's Facial Polishing Gel
I did a review of this exfoliant here. I got this limited edition large bottle (250ml) for about $15, which is pretty good considering that the normal 150ml is probably closer to $30! It wasn't a bad exfoliant, it just wasn't the best I have used, and I would never pay the full amount for it. It did a decent job at exfoliating, but because the formula is quite runny, I used this up quickly. It's not bad, but you can get much better exfoliants for much less, so I wouldn't repurchase this.

Head & Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner - Itchy Scalp Care
I bought this ages ago because I was using Redken shampoo and conditioner and after a while I started getting dandruff! I used this Head & Shoulders for a while until it cleared up, and then I moved on to the Sebastian Penetraitt range (which I will talk about later in this empties post), after I finished the Sebastian shampoo and condition, I went back to finish up the Head & Shoulders. I like this shampoo and conditioner, I got it on special in a pack for $5, and I should have bought more! I chose the itchy scalp range because it smells sooo good, it kinda smells like fresh apple and mint or something. I would repurchase this, it does a good job and smells so fresh and amazing. I wish I bought a couple more packs while they were on special.

Bioré Pore Perfect Shine Control Clay Mask
I used to use this mask when I was in high school, and ages ago I was looking to buy a new mask and I saw this and decided to get it. I loved in high school because I had problems with breakouts and oily skin, and this mask helped keep it under control. Fast forward 8 years and I find this too harsh for my skin. I bought this at least a good year ago, if not more, and I might use it once a month or every two months if lucky. I started using more frequently recently because I wanted to use it up. This mask stings and is uncomfortable to use, when I was younger I interpreted this as the mask is working, but now I interpret it as this mask is damaging my skin. It's probably not damaging my skin, but I can definitely tell that I have grown up and I no longer need masks like this. It does smell nice, it reminds me of the strawberry kiwi Lip Smakers. I won't repurchase this, but if you have super oily problem skin, you might like it. I think it costs around $10, I don't really remember.

Korres Vanilla Cinnamon Shower Gel - 250mL
I bought this on strawberrynet for about $11. I was expecting more from this shower gel, I thought it might smell like cinnamon cookies or something delicious, but it is more a masculine herbal scent, which is nice, but it didn't live up to my expectations. The shower gel itself isn't bad, I would have liked it to have foamed a little better, but it contains 89.3% natural products and is oil free, silicon free, alcohol free etc etc etc so it's good for your skin. I wouldn't repurchase this scent, but I have since bought the Korres guava shower gel,  I got the 400mL for $11 on strawberrynet and I will do a review of this shower gel soon.

Dove Clear Touch Anti White Marks
I had no issues with this deodorant, it smells clean and fresh, and it didn't leave white marks. I don't think it lasted anywhere close to the 24 hours that it claims, but it lasted during the day well enough. I have other deodorants that I am using at the moment, but I would be happy to buy this again and I think I have bought this one a few times previously.

Sebastian Penetraitt Shampoo and Conditioner
When I first tried this shampoo and conditioner I loved it and even put it in one of my favourites posts. When I first bought this I had long damaged hair and I needed intense and expensive shampoo and conditioner to detangle my hair. This combo did an amazing job, but its not cheap! I think I got these online for over $20 for each of them from strawberrynet, and I know they are more expensive in salons. I feel like I need to established that these products are really good before I explain why I will never buy these again. The reason why I started hating these is because the packaging is so bad, once you have used half the bottle it is a nightmare to squeeze the product out. The plastic is just so hard and the shape of the bottle is difficult to squeeze. The shampoo isn't as bad, because it's more liquidy and came out easier, but the conditioner was a nightmare and there were times I wanted to throw this across the bathroom. It took me so long to finish these because if there was other shampoo and conditioner around, I reached for those instead. Now that I have cut my hair, I don't need such an intense shampoo and conditioner, but I wouldn't repurchase this in the future unless they changed the packaging, great product though.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser - Nude
This is a sample that I got for free at some launch, and it contain 14.7ml which is quite a lot of product, since the full size contains 40mL and costs just under $60. I was using this a lot last summer and loved it, mainly because I was working outside a lot and I used this as a foundation. This product is SPF 20, but it does smell like sunscreen. I was considering buying a full size in a darker shade, but then I stopped working outside and I stopped using it. For a tinted moisturiser this did give a good coverage, but I recently used it again and I found that it made me quite oily. I think this product works for me in hotter weather where I am outside more, but it didn't work as well for me in colder weather. This is a great tinted moisturiser, but since it only works for me in limited situations so I will stick to other products like BB creams.

L'Occitane Rose Hand Cream
I got this in a three pack as a Christmas present, and I really liked them. This was my least favourite smell, I am not a big rose fan and it almost had a salty smell to it. It was the perfect handbag size, and the container is actually plastic so it didn't crack like other aluminum hand cream containers. I wouldn't repurchase this scent, but I did enjoy using it.

Avene Eluage Firming Gel
In my empties posts I don't usually include samples of products that I have already mentioned on my blog. So when I feature a Lust Have It box, I don't include those samples in these empties posts, because I have gone through each sample and said what I think. This is the one exception, I got this is in the July Lust Have It box and the only reason I kept it to save for this post, is because I wanted to mention that I had no idea how to use this product! All the directions say that you pat it onto deep wrinkles, but I don't have wrinkles so I didn't know how to test this out. With eye creams, I don't yet have eye wrinkles but I know how to apply eye cream, and I use eye cream to help prevent wrinkles. With this product I was just tapping it all over my face, and I eventually got frustrated and ended up squeezing it into the tub of my night cream. It seems like you need to have serious wrinkles to even bother trying this product, so I wouldn't bother repurchasing this for decades.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Recovery Complex
I was given this about a year ago as a present, and Estee Lauder has since replaced this eye cream with an updated version, which you can buy here. It is a good eye cream, but I was mainly using it as a preventative measure so I didn't see any drastic improvements. I did notice that in the morning my eye area felt very smooth after using it, but the feeling washed off when you cleansed your face. I wouldn't repurchase this yet, because I don't need it, but when I start getting wrinkles I will consider paying the $95 for another tub.

Carmex Original Flavour Moisturising Lip Balm
I love Carmex, I would repurchase this, but I have three tubes still on the go. This is my favourite lip balm, and the original is the best scent. I think this 10g tube costs about $4-5 here in Australia. I love it

Smashbox Hyerlash Mascara in Blackout
This was a so so mascara. I got this in May as part of a birthday present, so I don't know how much it costs, but being Smashbox it wouldn't be cheap. I liked the plastic bristles, it tended to give good coverage and was easy to built it up the mascara without the eyelashes getting too clumpy. The thing I didn't like about this mascara was that it became very dry and if you touched your eyes during the day it would flake off. I was happy to use this, but I wouldn't repurchase, I'm sure you can get heaps better mascaras for a lot less money.

  1. I was thinking about getting the Korres shower gel but now I'm not sure I would like that scent.

    1. yeah I wasn't a huge fan of that scent. I would recommend trying it in store before you buy it. The guava one is nicer in my opinion
