Review: Maybelline Volum' Express Mascara The Falsies Flared

August 10, 2012

I love mascara, I use it every day, but I have been using my current couple of mascaras for months now. I have been waiting for my mascaras to run out so I can try some new ones, but when I saw that Priceline were having $10 off this new Falsies mascara from Maybelline, I thought its about time to try something new, even if it means having 3-4 mascaras on the go at once. I ended up buying this mascara for $9-something. This is the Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Flared Mascara in 00 Blackest Black.

The packaging of this mascara is very cute, like the colours and I like the design. It is a very chunky tube which makes it a little bulky for makeup bags.

So this mascara is designed to lift and separate the lashes to give a flared effect. The handle of the wand is also supposed to be flexible, see the photo of the wand below. The brush doesn't look quite like the packaging makes it out to look, its not nearly as curved, and it tapers out at the end.

Argh no mascara!
With Flasies Flared mascara. Note: this is without curling lashes
So from the photos this mascara does make a huge difference to my lashes. Are they particularly flared? No, but they are significantly longer and thicker. I don't often use mascara without any other eye makeup, so this photo looks super weird for me. I also found that when I used this with my normal makeup (eyeliner and eye shadow) I found that this mascara wasn't as volumising as it looks in the photo above, and actually looks quite natural. This is not the go to mascara that I will turn to when I am going out at night with heavy eye makeup because it won't stand out, it defitinely doesn't give a false lash appearance.

One good thing about this mascara is that on the first application it wasn't clumpy. However I did find it hard to build up a good amount, and I am sure this will just get worse as it dries out. I also liked that this didn't go dry and flaky towards the end of the day, and didn't smudge or transfer. This would be a fantastic mascara if it gave just a little more volume, but I might be expecting too much, I suppose if it only claims to separate and lift the lashes, it did do that. I probably wouldn't repurchase this, not because it's a bad mascara, but only because I want different things from my mascara. If you like a more natural look, this would work well for you
